Affordability is no hoax

Trump constantly repeats blatantly obvious lies knowing that some people will believe anything that’s said often enough; even when it’s not true. This time is different. Everyone knows that affordability is not a “scam” or a “hoax.” Americans get reminded of rising inflation every time they pay their bills or shop for groceries. In addition to not bringing consumer prices down “on day one,” Trump’s economic policies have failed to fulfill his other fake promises. Despite reducing trade with the U.S., China continues to have a record trade surplus with the rest ...

Our Christmas spirit

We are supposed to be a Christian nation….“Love Thy Neighbor”. Christ told us to care for strangers. (Matthew 25:35 and 3 John 1:5-8) Instead we are torturing our neighbors. There are over 66,000 in detention centers. The vast majority, 73%, have no criminal record. They are construction and lawn service workers, farm hands, cooks and domestic workers, jobs most Americans don’t want. These persons are also fathers and mothers, sons and daughters. They are being tortured through overcrowding and unsanitary conditions. In the Stewart Detention Center in Georgia, for example, ...

Good job

I had the pleasure of sitting with the Repasz Band holiday concert and, like the four-star restaurant reviews, I give them a hundred stars. Their theme had to do with bells. They had the stage lined up with bells and one time during the concert, they threw out bells to the band. They really went over the moon with this concert, not to mention video slides about bells and also, A-plus for the bellringers. As I was sitting there watching the crowd come in, I thought to myself, being the oldest band around, it truly is amazing how you drag out not only the old generation but the ...

Astounding

The Nutcracker show which was performed on December 6th and 7th by the students of Saint John’s School of the Arts 1157 Market Street, Williamsport at the Journey Bank Community Arts Center was breathtaking. What a beautiful reminder of the holiday season that is front and center in our thoughts. I would be delinquent if I didn’t express a tremendous “HATS OFF” to the youth of Lycoming County and North Central Pa and Theresa Kendall, Artistic Director and her staff who also worked tirelessly to have such a spectacular performances of the Nutcracker. On behalf of the Board ...

Abuse of presidential pardons

Donald Trump made hay out of President Biden’s pardon of his son, Hunter. In my opinion, he had every right to raise questions. Biden’s motivation was understandable—he acted as a father—but a motive isn’t an excuse. Setting that aside, we’re left with a more troubling pattern: Trump’s unprecedented number of pardons and commutations granted to politically connected, indicted, or convicted figures. Why, for instance, did former Honduran President Juan Hernández—convicted of colluding with traffickers to move 400 tons of cocaine into the U.S.—deserve clemency? Why ...

‘Merry Christmas’

I hear people saying “merry Christmas” where ever I go. I know it’s December and I searched my calendar. BUT I do not see her name anywhere. I do see a date for December 25; the notation is for the birth of Jesus. Is this what you find on your calendar? Maybe just maybe we need another greeting. I’d like to suggest--- “Christ is born” what do you think about this instead of Merry Christmas? You are the judge. JOHN KOVICH Williamsport Submitted by email
