A quiet roar arising

Charlie Kirk was a peaceful man who went out of his way to openly engage in public discussion and political debate in the service of finding the truth. But most radicals today think political arguments consist of yelling and screaming while banging pots and throwing projectiles at anyone who doesn’t submit to their intolerant opinions. Of course that isn’t intelligent argumentation, it’s just ideological belligerence. And such belligerence produces belligerent people. And so Kirk was a real threat to these radicalized Americans. He wouldn’t bellicosely respond to the ...

Bye bye, Mr. Franklin

Pre-season prediction as National Champion; six games in; National Chumpion. From ranked to just plain rank! Fifth year $3 million Senior QB fell flat in his lack of performance. The $2 million Offensive Coordinator; offensive, and worse than that the newly acquired Defensive Coordinator being paid 3.1 million dollars; absolutely indefensible. Whom you might ask? None other than the overhyped and tarnished Penn State Football team and coaching staff! Then we have the absolute ineptitude of a man who is being paid the grand sum of $8.5 million with a record of 15-28 against ranked ...

Reject the ordinance

I’m writing to publicly ask members of City Council to reject the proposed ordinance enacting term limits. Voters should decide who their representatives should be, and how long they should serve. Service in local government is a thankless task, and I imagine the pool of candidates with the time and interest to campaign for public office is already limited. I don’t see the sense in further limiting who may be a candidate for elective office. Term limits make sense when elected officials use the power of incumbency to entrench their position in office. Is that the case in ...

Proofreading

I am writing to thank you for, well, nothing actually. Saturday’s (Oct 11) front page featured an article detailing a new fraud notification service offered by the Lycoming County office of Register and Recorder. You provided a public search address for the site: https://searchings.com/PALC. Twice. The only problem is that this address is wrong, completely useless, and gets the searcher nowhere. Through sheer determination, I discovered that the correct address is https://searchiqs/PALYC. Next time you try to be helpful, would you please proofread your information before you ...

Mocking a sacrifice

In 2019, local news media, including this paper, extolled the heroism of an uncle of mine, Pvt. James I. Trick, who met his death fighting fascists in the Hurtgen Forest of Germany in 1944, garnering him a Silver Star for bravery under fire. DNA testing conclusively identified his remains, and they returned home for military interment 75 years after his death. Now, President Trump has designated “antifa,” simply a shortened form of antifascist, as a domestic terrorist organization despite the fact that no such entity exists: no headquarters, no governing body, no staff, no ...

A version of recycling

I was reading the paper this morning and a letter from a South Williamsport man nearly made me spit out my breakfast. I read it several times to make sure I was seeing what I was seeing. “Biden Buses” dropping off illegal immigrants. I remember when governors of Florida and Texas sent buses filled will illegal immigrants and migrants to New York, Martha’s Vineyard and other blue states. They even used planes filled with migrants and illegal immigrants. But Florida and Texas have now built compounds or rather prisons for these same people they sent out of their states to be ...
