Not the same America

Just to comment on the editorial piece presented Wed, May 7, 2025 — it was good that someone wrote about the dismal schools in this area and other parts of Pennsylvania that do not really teach civics, American History or even World History as I was taught years ago. There are young people today worldwide that think the Holocaust never happened. History is rarely taught in schools today because many people think America is evil because of slavery in the past. Slavery is still going on in the world today through sex trafficking in our country and around the world with men, women, and ...

Take a breath, Pennsylvania

As the furor grows around AI, cryptocurrency, and their rapidly proliferating data centers, Pennsylvania is looking like the kid on the playground, waving his hand frantically out of a desperate desire to get a spot on the team. A high degree of uncertainty exists regarding AI’s energy demands. Remember when a single computer filled an entire room at IBM? Now we wear computers on our wrists. The recent announcement that China has produced a model (called DeepSeek) that outperforms Open AI, which is smaller and more efficient, with lower energy requirements, calls into question many ...

Serving the interests of all residents

I am a township resident since 2017 and read with interest the letter to the editor from Thomas G. Schaech on our upcoming election for Township Supervisor of Muncy Township. He was negative and accusatory of mismanagement of the current supervisor so I felt obligated to investigate his accusations for accuracy. Of note is that Mr. Schaech was a township supervisor however did not get re-elected 4 years ago. It is true that we had a tax increase in 2023 of 0.5 mil taking us to 2.5 mils to provide us all our services. Of note this was only the 3rd increase in 25 years, with the previous ...

Don’t bow to a king

America was founded on the simple principle that no one is privileged or worthy enough to become king. Yet here we are, sitting on our hands, watching our sacred republic crumble into a monarchy, compliments of Donald the First. I hear people say, “That’s Trump being Trump” or “It’s God’s Will,” or “It’s only for four years, let Trump be Trump.” But when George Washington stepped down as president, there was a precedent made regarding leadership, one of duty, service, humility, abiding by and upholding the law. All these principles are being undone by the ...

Water troubles

My name is Zaid Ali, and I’m a small business owner and landlord in the City of Williamsport. I write today not only on behalf of myself but on behalf of every property owner and landlord who has been quietly burdened by an unfair and broken system enforced by our local water authority - one that allows for unchecked financial sabotage at the hands of irresponsible tenants, and refuses to work with those seeking reasonable solutions. Under current policy, water bills in Williamsport are placed in the name of the property owner, not the tenant. This structure - which may have ...

Spare us the sermons

In your May 6th column quoting other newspapers calling for us to “move beyond hatred and division,” I couldn’t help but think: that’s rich. It’s a bit like watching the arsonist return to the scene with a garden hose and a lecture on fire safety. For years, the Sun-Gazette has given generous column inches to letters and editorials that stoked the very division you now suggest we transcend. Under both Obama and Biden, you printed screeds that weren’t just critical, but often laced with paranoia, resentment, and barely concealed contempt — not for policies, but for people. ...
