Air conditioners have mostly run non-stop throughout Needville, Texas this summer. Sweltering days featuring temperatures soaring above 100 degrees have sometimes made going outside feel like entering a sauna.
But 12 Little Leaguers and their three coaches spent ample time outside nearly every day. And nobody complained about the heat.
The Needville Little League all-stars had a lofty goal and there was no time to lose; no time to bemoan things beyond their control. So, they did what they did best and kept working.
Needville paid the price and now it is reaping the profits. The Southwest champions turned up the heat throughout districts, sections, states and regionals and have made history becoming their league's first team to reach the Little League World Series.
Needville 1, Mother Nature 0.
"They didn't let that heat slow them down. They were out there every day in the heat and they came back every day with the same energy," Needville manager Andy McRae said. "They knew what they were building to. We set this goal years ago and worked toward it and they really bought in."
Needville features some phenomenally talented players as do all the Series participants. So do so many other teams throughout Texas and the Southwest region. The only way Needville could reach this point then was buy relentlessly working. Since the core of this group came together as 7-year-olds, that is exactly what they have done.
Two years ago, this team captured the minor division state championship before finishing as the runner-up in the 9-11 division. Whether champion or runner-up, the players stayed focused and dedicated. The work continued and paid off at the perfect time this summer, helping Needville win all but one game while reaching the ultimate Little League destination.
"First and foremost, this achievement represents the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and passion on the part of the young athletes and coaches who make up the Needville Little League team," Needville mayor Chad Nesvadba said. "These kids have put in countless hours of practice, honing their skills, and building a strong camaraderie that has now brought them to this prestigious global stage. The journey they have undertaken together has created a sense of unity and friendship that extends beyond the baseball diamond."
"We've been watching them since they came up through T-ball and machine pitch and we never had a doubt that they would accomplish this," Needville Little League president Charlie Swanson said. "They always give 100% … actually, they give 120%. It's the time they put into it and the talent they have. They're solid defensively and they hit 1-12."
Needville showed in a hard-fought 5-3 Southwest championship win against Louisiana. It was the bottom of the lineup which ignited a pivotal two-out, three-run rally, helping Needville go ahead, 5-1. Michael Raven and Cade Hammonds hit RBI doubles during that game, highlighting the team's depth. Whatever their position in the field or spot in the lineup, all the players have enhanced their all-star credentials during this summer-long run.
All those players have worked for these moments which they so often have owned. One does not come this far and emerge as one of the world's best teams without making a lot of sacrifices. When many friends may be on vacation, these players stayed home, stayed focused and kept climbing that championship ladder. They have not reached the world's summit, but look how far this group has ascended.
"We have a lot grinders on this team. You have to have the athletes, No. 1, but you also have to have guys who will get after it and grind and take extra reps and extra swings in the cage," McRae said. "They play other sports, but they also play fall ball and we have practiced all but five days this summer. There's a lot of dedication behind what we wanted to do. We knew it would take work and we said, 'If you don't want to do this let us know,' and they all jumped in feet first and got after it."
The 2021 team which captured the Texas East state championship while going undefeated until a positive COVID-19 test led to a disqualification after a victory at the Southwest regional. These players learned from those all-stars what it took to excel at a high level and achieve Little League greatness.
This team took that baton from that state champion and will pass it along to the next group in 2024. Something big has started blossoming in Needville. At its core, all this success has been built upon a foundation of hard work. And that goes for the volunteers and board members as well.
Together, Needville has made its mark. Old school values have helped it become the league's first team to ever reach the Series. What a blueprint those players have left for future teams as well. What a moment they have created for the entire community.
"In the end, making it to the Little League World Series isn't just about a baseball tournament; it's about a town's spirit, unity, and the incredible journey of a group of young athletes who have become hometown heroes," Nesvadba said. "The excitement in Needville is a testament to the power of sports to bring people together, ignite passion, and create lasting memories that will be cherished for generations to come."
