Florida holds off a Hawaii rally late to defeat West champions

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Southeast's Garrett Rohozen receives a low five from his third base coach after hitting a solo home run in the third inning.

A closer look at the 4-3 Lake Mary, Florida win over Wailuku, Hawaii Wednesday at Lamade Stadium.

PLAY OF THE GAME — The final out: Hawaii fought back after trailing 4-0 in the fourth inning, scoring three times. Gabriel Laloulu then smashed a lead-off double off the center field wall in the sixth with it 4-3. He went to third on a bunt but Luis Calo recorded a strikeout before inducing a game-ending groundout to second baseman Chase Anderson as Florida won an absolute thriller.

FLORIDA PLAYER OF THE GAME — Luis Calo: Florida manager Jonathan Anderson has labeled Calo cold-blooded and he proved it with amazing pitching in relief. Calo stranded the bases loaded in the fourth inning after entering in a 4-3 game. He then put out the fire in the sixth and was at his best when the pressure was its most intense.

HAWAII PLAYER OF THE GAME — Gauge Pacheco: An excellent outfielder, Pacheco capped a strong Series in impressive fashion, going 2 for 2 with an RBI double and run. His double nearly left the park and highlighted Hawaii’s three-run fourth inning.

BIG INNING–Hawaii sixth: The West champions trailed 4-0 in the fourth inning before scoring three times. They refused to go down in the sixth, erasing a 4-3 deficit and rallying in exciting fashion, coming up just shy in the end.

BEST EFFORT–Calo’s pitching: Mariano Rivera might have had a tough time coming in with bases loaded and one out in a one-run game. Instead, Calo owned the moment and won two straight fierce battles, getting strikeouts on 3-2 pitches. Those at-bats produced 14 pitches but Calo never broke. That was the case in the sixth inning, too, as he helped will Florida into the U.S. final three.

FLASHING LEATHER–Hawaii third baseman Brextyn Kamaha’o-Hong made a nice catch with the bases loaded in the second inning. Hong raced backward, down the line and caught the ball near the wall. It was a big catch and helped Hawaii leave the bases loaded with one out and stay within striking distance. In the bottom of the inning, Florida second baseman Chase Anderson made a nice stop on a bounding ball up the middle. Charging toward the hole near second base, Anderson retrieved it, set himself and unleashed a perfect throw to first baseman DJ Mieses. Pitcher Jacob Bibaud kept the great plays coming a few pitches later. This time, he reached back and snagged a hard-hit grounder near the back of the mound. It most likely would have gone for a single, but Bibaud’s quick glove work led to an easy throw and out for the inning’s second out. Hong made another great play in the third inning when he lunged to his right and stopped Liam Morrisey smash that looked like it might go for a two-run double or triple. Instead, Hong stopped the ball down the line and then made a chest-high throw which retired the speedy Morrisey for the third out. Hong did it again in the fourth inning, snaring a wicked line drive from Hunter Alexander which stranded two runners. Pitcher Luis Calo made a huge play to close the fifth inning, snaring a line drive and doubling off the runner at first base while keeping Florida ahead, 4-3.

HOME RUNS: Garrett Rohozen put Florida up 4-0 when he led off the third inning with a long home run over the left field fence. Rohozen slammed the 1-0 pitch and it was a no-doubter as the Florida seemed poised to break things open, only for Hawaii to come storming back.

WHAT IT MEANS– Florida advances to the loser’s bracket final Thursday and plays Nevada for a spot in the U.S. Final. Hawaii closed its fantastic run after winning two Series games and nearly staging a fantastic comeback.
