Crosscutter ace Colton Cosper signed by NY Mets

Williamsport Crosscutter starter Colton Cosper has found a new home.

After a scintillating start to the second half, Cosper was picked up by the New York Mets, signing the starter to a minor league contract.

The contract comes after a three game span with the Williamsport Crosscutters that saw the Georgia native post a 0.53 earned run average across 17 innings pitched. Over the course of his three starts, the left hander conceded just one walk while throwing 20 strikeouts.

“The first time I ever saw him, I said ‘this guy can pitch,'” said Williamsport Crosscutter manager Kenny Thomas. “He just knows what he is doing out there. He knows how to control the game, and he is tough to hit.”

Cosper got his Williamsport career started in the second half opener against the Trenton Thunder. In the garden state, the Georgia native pitched five innings, conceding his only earned run on four hits while throwing eight strikeouts.

Colton would make his only start at Historic Bowman Field against the same Trenton Thunder team. The starter would remember them well, going six innings while not allowing a run across seven hits, one walk, and five strikeouts.

The Georgia native’s final start would be on the road Saturday against the State College Spikes. In what would be Cosper’s magnum opus with Williamsport, he would go six innings allowing just two hits and no walks while throwing seven strikeouts.

By then, it seemed as though enough heads were turned, with Cosper being signed by this week.

Cosper’s pitching arsenal includes what is officially listed as a changeup that falls around the mid-80’s. The pitch appears as a slower fastball before dipping below many batters’ swings.

His arsenal also features an overwhelming mid-70’s slider that can start at one side of the plate before dramatically swerving right from the catcher’s point of view.

Those two pitches were dynamic enough to fool hitters time and time again, with opposing batters getting just 13 hits across 17 innings pitched.

The signing, while a dream scenario for the league as well as the Cutters, creates an additional selection headache for Thomas, who is without both Friday and Saturday’s scheduled starter. Cosper was scheduled to pitch tomorrow with Tyler Valdez, who is now off the roster with an injury, expected to go Saturday.

The Mets’ rookie affiliate team are the FCL Mets of the Florida Complex League, with their single-a program staying in the Sunshine State in St. Lucie.

Starting at $2.99/week.
