Millionaires have success on 1st day of district swimming

By From staff reports 9 min read

WILKES-BARRE -- Williamsport competed in Day 1 of the District 2 swimming championships held at the Wilkes-Barre CYC and had a solid day, not just from an individual standpoint, but team-wise as well.

The Williamsport girls are currently first in the team standings, ahead of Delaware Valley and the boys are second.

That team success is what the Millionaires were hoping for entering the district meet.

"We knew it was a team goal and we've been working to stress the team unity and contribution," Williamsport coach Nate Witmer said. "I think that's benefiting us here in these kind of last little bit of the season."

Lydia Smith and Matt Beard walked away from Day 1 with gold around their necks. Beard won in the 50 free in 21.58 seconds, winning the event by just .18 seconds.

In the 50 free, Smith won in a close race with a time of 25.01, winning by two tenths of a second. She also took first in the 200 free in 1:59.50.

In total, the Millionaires took home five gold medals on Day 1 of competition and numerous top-5 finishes.

"They both are great additions to the team. We're going to definitely miss them next year," Witmer said. "Not only are they great at swimming, but they're great character wise. They're great at building the team and keeping everyone together and working toward team goals.

"While they excel on individual level, they really push the team and that's great."

Beard and Smith also both helped relay teams earn gold Friday night.

The girls 200 free relay team of Smith, Isabelle Griswold, Amy Jarvis and Sydney Kelley won. On the boys side, the 200 medley relay team of Devin Shank, Riley Hockman, Jack Beattie and Beard earned a victory with a time of 1:40.84, winning by roughly 1.5 seconds.

Beattie won last week in the District 2 Class AAA diving competition as well.

Amy Jarvis took third in the 200 free in a race that was tight until the end. Smith won with a time of 1:59.50 and Hazleton's Marina O'Hara was right behind her, finishing in 1:59.69. Jarvis finished in 2:02.23.

Those tight races are more than beneficial for Williamsport's swimmers not just in districts, but looking ahead at the state meet.

"I think there's a lot of great competition. It's never fun to see some of the other kids come in close, whenever you have a race real close, someone wins and someone loses," Witmer said. "We're very happy when we get wins."

Williamsport's 200 medley relay team of Mallory Pardoe, Ellie Fisher, Elisa DiNicola and Sydney Kelley on the girls side finished in second, just over a second behind Delaware Valley's winning team.

Griswold finished third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:23.56. In the 50 free, Kelley earned a third-place finish in 25.63, just .62 seconds behind teammate Smith.

In the 100 fly on the girls side, Williamsport had two swimmers in the top 4 as Pardoe took second in 58.25 and DiNicola finished fourth in 1:02.21.

In boys competition, Williamsport had three swimmers place fifth or better in the 100 fly as Beattie (third),Ross Flerlage (fourth) and Shank (fifth) all reached the podium. The Millionaires' 200 free relay team also took second in 1:30.45 with Beattie, Riley Hockman, Shank and Beard.

The district meet continues today at 5 p.m. for Class AAA competition with races in the 100 free, 500 free, 100 back, 100 breast and 400 free relay.

Williamsport is hoping to stay at the top of the standings on both the boys and girls side, but Witmer knows the Millionaires are in for a tough second day of competition.

"Delaware Valley is in second and they got some strong events (today). It'll be a close one in the end," Witmer said. "It's great competition and they're very excited and I think a lot of them would run the second day right now if they could."
