Did you know that bowling shoes came into use in the mid-1920s? These shoes had hard rubber surfaces which did not scuff the approaches as did the softer rubber street shoes, and it was no longer necessary to regularly clean the scuff marks off the approaches.
Although Rule 12 does not require bowling shoes, it forbids the use of soft rubber shoes or heels which rub off on the approach under the heading of "Approaches Must Not Be Defaced." This rule prohibits the application of any foreign substance on the approach including powder, pumice and resin on shoes that detracts from the possibility of other bowlers having normal conditions.
Of interest locally, it seems that Tommy Barger Sr. observed the use of bowling shoes at the 1927 ABC National Tournament and talked the local JF Dayton Shoe Company into producing bowling shoes in Williamsport.
Hope to see you on the lanes.
