This week we remember 1973 local Hall of Fame inductee Martha Crafts. Starting her bowling career in 1936, Crafts soon became known as one of the top women bowlers in the area, carrying an average between 172 and 183. She sometimes bowled all day long on Sundays and was always picked to bowl in exhibitions.

Crafts remembers bowling a 724 in a tournament and winning a silver vase engraved with her name and score.

A right-handed bowler, she started out sliding on her right foot. Upon watching her delivery, a professional bowler said that anyone who bowled as good as she did in the way that she did, should stick with it, but he suggested she get some left-handed shoes. Crafts was the first Vice President of the Williamsport Women’s Bowling Association when it was founded in 1941.

Hope to see you on the lanes.
