Bucknell announces 7 incoming freshmen in college football

Bucknell football coach Dave Cecchini announced the addition of seven players to his team’s incoming freshman class Wednesday as part of NCAA football’s traditional signing period.

“Today’s additions bring a lot of talent and depth to an already stellar recruiting class,” Cecchini said. “We’re excited for them to join our program and can’t wait to see the impact they will have this coming fall.”

Those seven players are offensive lineman Mason Jones (Franklin, Tennessee), wide receiver Mason Muir (Greenwich, Connecticut), tight end Cade Rooney (Berwyn), safety John Schlendorf (Toms River, New Jersey), safety Alex Smith Jr. (Charlotte, North Carolina), tight end Christian Spugnardi (Bethlehem) and offensive lineman Frederick Sturgis (Cincinnati).

The Bison’s incoming freshman class is now 24 players strong; as part of NCAA football’s Early Signing Period, they inked 17 players to National Letters of Intent in December.

Cecchini and the Bison football staff will continue to add to the class of 2025 through the traditional signing period, which ends on April 1.

Jones played in the Tennessee East-West All-Star Classic game, an invitation-only senior bowl.

Muir was an all-conference wide receiver in Connecticut and caught 24 passes for 234 yards and seven TDs as a junior. In 2018, he helped lead Greenwich to the 2018 Connecticut Class LL title with a 13-0 record.

Rooney helped St. Joseph’s Prep capture three straight PIAA Class 6A championships and consistently rank in the nation’s top 3. St. Joseph’s Prep went 31-2 over that span and became the state’s first three-peat champion since 1999. He was also an All-Catholic first-team tight end.

Schlendorf spent three years at Donovan Catholic before he transferred to Olympus as a senior, where he was a first-team all-region pick and was Olympus defensive MVP.

Smith finished fourth in tackles and helped Hickory Ridge go 8-4 in 2019. He also was a team captain.

Spugnardi helped the Vikings win the District 11 Class AAAA title as a senior and finished district runners-up as a junior. He was a first-team All=-EPC Lehigh Division tight end and second-team defensive end.

Sturgis helped Archbishop Moeller in Cincinnati win a Greater Catholic League title and was a two-time All-GCL offensive lineman and three-year starter.

The Bison went 3-8 in 2019. Bucknell did not play in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
