Local roundup: Hughesville tops NPM in baseball

Carter Cowburn dominated in his first high school and Hughesville collected 11 hits as it defeated North Penn-Mansfield, 11-0, in six innings in its season opener Monday on the road. Cowburn threw five innings of one-hit baseball, striking out 12 and letting the Tigers put just three balls in play.

Four players produced multi-hit games and Hughesville hit well throughout the lineup. Clayton Poust homered and doubled while Coen Riegner, Brenden Knight and Dylan Farnsworth each had two hits. Freshman Gage Thomas added a double.

• In boys tennis, South Williamsport fell to Hughesville, 4-1. Hughesville’s Logan Burns (No. 1 singles) and Mikey Dylina (No. 2) both won with 6-1, 6-1 scores over Logan Ogden and Trent Morrison, respectively.

South Williamsport’s Kade Sanford won at No. 3 singles, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 against Austin Young.

Montoursville blanked Bloomsburg, 5-0. Jared Matlack won at No. 2 singles for the Warriors by beating John Mylin, 6-0, 6-0. Andrew Stapp won at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2, and Tyler Gilbert picked up a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles.

Central Mountain continued its impressive start to the season by defeating Danville, 5-0, to stay unbeaten (4-0). David Lindsay won, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles for the Wildcats. Ethan Hall won at No. 2 singles for Central Mountain and Asher Talbot won at No. 3 singles.

• The Lock Haven University softball team closed out its four-game PSAC Eastern Division series with Shippensburg by being swept, 12-4 and 11-2.

Riley McClellan homered once in each game and Casey Carpenter hit a game-one home run.

In game one, Ship scored its 12 runs on 18 hits. Carpenter and McClellan led the way for LHU at the plate in the day’s opener. Carpenter was 2 for 3 with her home run and McClellan also finished 2 for 3 with a homer.

Benner spun the ball perfectly all game in the 14-0 victory over Morrisville on Saturday, rightfully earning her first career perfect game.

The junior sat down eight batters across the full five innings while not allowing a single hit or base-on-balls. Benner also drove in a run for the Wildcats in her sole appearance at the plate that contest.

This is Benner’s second career NEAC Pitcher of the Week honor, after earning the award in her freshman season.
