Playing the last MAC Commonwealth champions to open the 2021 season, the Lycoming College softball team put in two good efforts, but Arcadia University was able to come-from-behind for 4-1 and 5-3 MAC Freedom wins on Sunday.
In the second game, Arcadia (4-0 overall) used two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to stave off a Lycoming (0-2 overall) rally and post a 5-3 win.
Down 3-1 in the fifth inning, Lycoming got to work when senior Taylor Gessner, a Lewisburg native, singled to left with one out. Sophomore Morgan Wetzel, a Central Mountain grad, followed with a walk and junior Morgan Klosko delivered an RBI double to left before a groundout allowed Wetzel scored to tie the game.
The Knights took the lead back in the bottom of the inning, as a leadoff single, a fielder's choice and a sac bunt left runners at second and third with one out before a passed ball and a groundout plated the two deciding runs. Lycoming's last six batters were retired in order.
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, as freshman Kylie Segraves, a Williamsport grad, led off with a walk before sophomore Mackenzie Glosek reached on an error.
It was a wild and windy day at Depew Field as Bucknell and Lehigh played for more than four-and-a-half hours and combined for 27 runs and new NCAA record in college baseball. In the end it was the Mountain Hawks breaking open a 10-all tie with seven runs in the top of the 12th inning en route to a 17-10 verdict in the rubber match of a three-game weekend series.
Peter Marren and Logan Kellerman both logged three hits and three RBIs for the Bison, while Jacob Corson also had a three-hit day to continue the strong start to his freshman season. Bucknell used seven pitchers in the game, and middle relievers Jacob Terwilliger and Anthony Casciola were bright spots, combining to yield one earned run over 7.2 innings while striking out 10.
Casey Rother went 4-for-7 to pace Lehigh's 13-hit attack, and it was his double over the third base bag that broke the tie in the top of the 12th. Riley Davis drove in three runs for Lehigh, and leadoff hitter Eric Cichocki reached base six times, four via hit by pitch.
Bucknell senior John Meeks picked up one more postseason honor when he was named to the Patriot League Tournament All-Tournament team. Meeks was outstanding in his two playoff appearances earlier this month, totaling 54 points, 16 rebounds and six assists in games against Lafayette and Colgate.
Meeks had one of the best performances in the entire tournament in Bucknell's 92-84 quarterfinal victory over Lafayette. He scored 23 points in the first half and finished with 31 points and 11 rebounds in the game.
