Montoursville’s Andrew Stapp and Jared Matlack and Wellsboro’s Will Poirier and Zach Singer both advanced to the District 4 boys tennis doubles tournament semifinals Saturday afternoon at Williamsport High School.
The semifinals are Monday at 1 p.m. at the Central PA Tennis Center with the final to follow.
Stapp and Matlack defeated Lewisburg’s Chen Chen Gu and Eddie Monaco in the second round, 6-4, 6-1 and defeated Jersey Shore’s Ross Fuller and Conner Cornelius in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-1, to get to the semifinals. The Warriors’ duo will face Central Columbia’s Jordan Baker and Brady Madden.
Poirier and Singer defeated Loyalsock’s Sean Jensen and Liam Bastian in the first round, 6-0, 6-1, and defeated Central Columbia’s Bryce Hazzard and Matt Getz in three sets in the second round, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2. Poirier and Singer then defeated Jersey Shore’s Jackson Stemler and Eli Bower, 6-3, 6-0, to get to the semifinals. The Wellsboro doubles team will face Selinsgrove’s Ethan Harris and Eli Markle in the semifinals.
Milton’s Jamir Wilt and Brodey Scoggins advanced to the quarterfinals in the top half of the bracket. The two defeated North Penn-Liberty’s River Hicks-Lee and Allen Weed, 6-1, 6-1 in the first round before getting past Muncy’s Ernie Coppes and Rowan Revata, 6-2, 7-6.
Lewisburg’s Zach Higgins and Henry Schumacher defeated Hughesville’s Chase Michael and Mason Thomas, 6-0, 6-3, in the first round and advanced to the quarterfinals with a tough 6-4, 7-6 win against Montoursville’s D.J. Alexander and Noah Shaffer.
Jersey Shore’s Stemler and Bower defeated Bloomsburg’s Andrew Madara and John Mylin, 6-1, 6-1 before falling to Poirier and Singer. The Bulldogs’ doubles team also rallied against South Williamsport’s Kade Sanford and Ross Flerlage in the first round. After falling behind and losing the first set, 6-4, Stemler and Jacson won the next two, 6-4, 6-0, to advance. Muncy’s Coppes and Revata also earned a three-set victory in which they rallied after falling in the first set in the first round to Wellsboro’s Dustin Benedict and Owen Richardson. Wellsboro’s duo won the first set, 6-2, and Coppes and Revata then won the next two, 6-0, 7-5.
