High school roundup: South Williamsport girls soccer defeats Muncy, 5-1 behind early goals from Casella

South Williamsport girls soccer downed Muncy, 5-1 behind two goals from Olivia Casella to kick off the scoring in girls soccer on Tuesday.

Aleigha Rieppel, McKaye Wilton and Piper Minier also fount the back of the net for the Mounties.

Sarina Beider and Kailee Helmrick each knotted a goal for Williamsport, though the Millionaires fell to Selinsgrove, 5-2.

• In boys soccer, Milton defeated Hughesville, 7-2, as Seth Yoder and Conner Smith both scored twice and Dominic Ballo had two assists. Hughesville’s two goals came from Nick Trevouledes and Jeff Fenstermacher.

The Spartans took a 2-0 lead seven minutes into the game before Milton would score seven unanswered.

• Montgomery girls tennis swept Cowanesque Valley, 5-0 in team score without any three-setters. Loyalsock edged Danville, 3-2.

Anna Hall and won in singles for the Lancers, and Loyalsock took both doubles.

Hughesville swept Muncy, 5-0 in team score without any three-setters.

South Williamsport defeated Montoursville, 3-2. Olivia Dorner won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, over Kara Mann. Katelyn Good won for Montoursville at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1.

Bucktail beat North Penn-Liberty in two matches, 5-0, 5-0. In the second match, Bucktail’s Abby Miller and Giada DeMarte won at No. 1 doubles in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Towanda defeated Wellsboro, 4-1. The Green Hornets’ lone win came from Hanna Nuss, who defeated Jocelyn Stroud at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7).

• Jacob Hess ran a strong 17 minute, 9-second race to both win the indivdual event and help Lewisburg swept Williamsport and Montoursville in boys cross country. Williamsport's Ethan Holcomb took second in 17:24 with Lewisburg taking four of the top five spots.

Montoursville's Gabby Shearer won the girls race in 20:21, beating the second-place finisher by 93 seconds. Lewisburg won both girls meets and Williamsport edged Montoursville, 25-31.

Canton's Michael Skipper took the boys top spot in 21:09 against Troy and Sullivan County. Teammate Isaiah Niemczyk took fifth in a meet which Troy swept. Troy also took the girls races, but Canton's Camille McRoberts finished in second, finishing in 25:21.

• In girls field hockey, Hallie McClure scored twice and had an assist while Madeline Boerckle added two goals in the Indians’ 7-0 win against Milton.

Lewisburg fell to Mifflin County, 3-2. Rylee Dyroff and Maddie Redding both scored for the Green Dragons. All three of Mifflin County’s goals came from Hailee Sheetz.

• Galeton beat Port Allegheny, 3-0, in girls volleyball (25-13, 25-23, 25-10). Alli Macenski had a team-high 13 kills and Johanna Dickerson led the team with 14 assists. Lauren Sauley had eight assists and nine digs, Mikayla Schott added 10 digs and Eve Cole had eight.

• Lycoming freshman Arianna Santosposted nine kills and freshman Brynne Bisel notched seven to lead the Warriors’ volleyball team, which held Wilson College to a negative hitting percentage in a 3-0 (25-15, 26-24, 25-18).

The Warriors (6-9 overall) snapped a seven-game skid thanks to a defensive effort that scooped up 46 digs and forced 23 Phoenix (0-7 overall) errors, as Wilson hit -.010 in the match.

Sophomore Megan Starkweather, a Wellsboro graduate, had 15 assists, three kills, two aces and five digs and first-year Ava Coombs notched six kills and four digs. Freshman Ali Koval, a North Penn-Mansfield graduate, notched a match-high 18 digs and both first-years Kendall Myers and Camryn Quelet each had seven digs.

• With the score 3-2 in the second set tiebreaker, freshman Rei Saar, a Montoursville graduate, gutted out a nearly three-minute long rally, helping her take control before back-to-back winners in the superset tiebreaker sent her to her fourth straight singles win to highlight the afternoon for the Lycoming College women's tennis team, which fell to Grove City, 8-1.

After Lillian Jeynes won the first set at No. 5 singles, Saar fought back from a 5-4 deficit in the second set to force the tiebreaker, where her three-minute rally led to a winner on the next point, helping her to take a 5-2 lead en route to the 7-3 win. In the superset tiebreaker, Saar broke open a close set with back-to-back forehand winners to take a 9-6 lead before winning the match two points later. She improved to 7-1 on the season.
