By From staff reports 6 min read

Hughesville won the team title at the PIAA Class A boys cross country championships and Lewisburg took first in the Class AA field at Hershey on Saturday morning.

A pair of top-20 finishers led the way for the Spartans. Senior Morgan Gavitt took seventh 17:05.70, senior Hunter Foust was an 17th-place finisher in 17:8.90.

“I don’t know yet, I’ll find out tomorrow. It’s not set in yet,” Hughesville coach Josh Gavitt said. “It’s just amazing. Were blessed with a lot of great talent, a lot of great runners, a lot of great parents, great volunteer coaches. We’re just really blessed, and we really did build it up from scratch, and it’s a great culmination.”

Hughesville senior Logan Long took 32ndth in 17:59.70.

Hughesville’s Kenny Draper took 64th in 18:21.30 and Shea McCusker was a 77th-place finisher in 18:28.40.

Gavitt’s time was just 29 seconds behind first-place finisher Thomas Smigo of Palisades.

“They took it in stride, one day at a time. I kept telling them — they would look at the standings or projections — look guys, we’ve got a long ways to get in there, yet. Anything can happen,” Josh Gavitt said. “It’s a very fragile balance, just one day at a time and we made it.”

The team title comes a year after the Spartans took fourth in Class A.

“For those guys, they raced a great race. Five of them been here last year, and they kind of knew what to expect, and they did it,” Josh Gavitt said. “They knew what to do and they got it done. It was great.”

Lewisburg’s Jacob Hess finished third in 16:05.40 in Class AA, behind only Archbishop Wood’s Gary Martin (15:46.70) and Greencastle-Antrim’s Weber Long (15:59.50). Hess was the Green Dragon’s only top-20 finisher.
