This week we remember Helen Lutes, who was inducted into the local Hall of Fame in 1974. As a gym teacher at Williamsport High School, Lutes introduced many high school girls to the sport of bowling.
From the mid 1930s to the late 1940s, she taught an estimated 1,400 high school girls to bowl before taking a job at Mansfield State College where she spent 25 more yeas instructing some 5,200 college women to bowl.
She was listed in the Who's Who of American Women. While in Williamsport, Lutes was instrumental in starting the first local High School Leagues.
She taught 20 girls teams on Saturday morning at the YMCA plus 20 more teams on Saturday afternoon at the ABC. She took up the game of bowling at the age of 21 on two lanes over the Capital Theater, acquiring most of her bowling knowledge by reading and applying what she had read.
With a career high average of about 172, her top series was 613 and her top game was 276.
Hope to see you on the lanes.
