Local roundup: Williamsport girls win first game in dramatic fashion

In girls basketball, Williamsport won its first game in dramatic fashion, rallying in the fourth quarter to defeat perennial District 2 power Holy Redeemer, 51-49. Kailee Helmrich and Sarina Beiter were outstanding in the backcourt, combining for 34 points. Helmrich scored 18 and Beiter a career-high 16. Ally Chilson added nine and Williamsport outscored Redeemer 16-10 in the fourth quarter.

Ariana Copeland scored 10 points and Muncy played stifling defense as it went on the road and defeated Benton, 28-18 while improving to 5-0. The Indians allowed three points or fewer in three of the four quarters and Avery Bigelow scored eight points. The Indians again surged in the fourth quarter and outscored Benton, 10-2 with Mia Edkin hitting two 3-pointers.

Allyia Kennedy and Mia Patterson produced 50 points, Rhandie Jessell ran the offense well and Grace Baylor played outstanding defense as Loyalsock pulled away from fellow District 4 Class AAA title contender Towanda and won a district semifinal rematch, 72-50. Kennedy matched a career-high with 27 points and 11 rebounds while Patterson scored 23 points, grabbed nine rebounds and added four assists. Baylor’s defense against elite scorer Paige Manchester was crucial in the second half when Loyalsock went on a 22-7 third-quarter run to break open what was a one-point game at halftime. She also scored nine points while Rylie French hit two 3-pointers.

South Williamsport continued playing outstanding defense, defeating Minersville, 43-29. The Mounties allowed just eight field goals and have held opponents to 13 field goals the past two games while improving to 3-0. Claudia Green continued her strong senior season and scored a game-high 18 points. Piper Minier added 13 and South outscored Minersville 29-18 in the second half.

St. John Neumann won its first game, thumping CMVT, 44-11 as nine players scored. Sheiana Tutler produced another strong all-around game, scoring 14 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and making six steals. Gigi Parlante also has been filling up the stat sheet and had seven points and 10 rebounds. Shanniyah Tutler scored six points, pulled down seven rebounds and made five steals off the bench.

Lewisburg fell on the road to Central Mountain, 34-23, to drop to 0-4. The Wildcats were led by Mia Kopysciansky’s 15 points and Kiahana Jones’s eight. Tara Mader added seven.

Sophie Kilbride scored eight for Lewisburg to lead the Green Dragons as she also grabbed seven rebounds, as did Keeley Baker. She had a team-high seven steals.

• Hughesville defeated Warrior Run in boys basketball, 59-25, on Monday evening. Nick Trevouledes scored 12 points for the Spartans and Carter Cowburn added 10.

Warrior Run was led by Nathan Axtman’s 11 points thanks to his three 3-pointers.

North Penn-Mansfield had four players in double figures as the Tigers defeated South Williamsport, 64-50. Karson Dominick scored 19 points and Brody Burleigh added 17.

Alex Davis and Eli Shaw scored 11 and 10, respectively, for N.P.-Mansfield.

South Williamsport’s Lee Habalar scored 25 points to lead the Mounties, as he was the only South Williamsport player in double figures.

Muncy fell in a close contest to Southern Columbia, 65-58. Ross Eyer had a monster game, scoring 28 points and Branson Eyer added 11 points for the Indians.

Southern Columbia had five players in double figures, led by Tyler Arnold’s 15 points. Braejen Wisloski and Brian Britton each scored 12.

• Three times on Monday afternoon, the Lycoming College wrestling team found itself trailing heading into the 197-pound match and all three times, the duo of sophomore 197-pounder Gable Crebs (Montoursville graduate) and senior heavyweight Connor Fulmer offered up bonus-point wins, helping Lycoming sweep all four of its matches at the Rennie Rodarmel Allstate Duals.

Crebs finished the day with two pins, a technical fall and a major decision and Fulmer had two falls, a forfeit win and a major decision. Sophomore Wiley Kahler also went 3-0 at 141 pounds, winning by decision, major decision and fall.

The four wins leaves Lycoming (6-0 overall) one win shy of becoming the fifth Division III program in history to reach 800 career dual meet wins, where it can join Springfield (1,049), Wilkes (896), Wartburg (851) and Olivet (814). Lycoming has a 799-317-9 record (.708) since the program’s founding in 1956.

Lycoming’s biggest comeback came against SUNY Cortland (2-1 overall) in the third match of the day. Trailing 18-11 heading into the 197-pound match, Crebs posted a pin of Mike Rivera in 1:19 to get the Warriors within a point for the undefeated Fulmer, who posted an 8-0 major decision over Ben Klei to earn four more team points and secure the win.

First-year Thomas Conselyea pinned Charles Trimber in 1:24 at 133 pounds, first-year Chase Chapman posted an 8-2 win over Noah Hunt at 141, Bartlett added a 5-2 decision over Nicholas Semon at 149 and junior Hunter O’Connor, a Jersey Shore graduate, added a 19-6 major decision over Cullen van Rooyen at 165 to build a 16-6 lead before Penn College got 11 points in the next two bouts to take the lead, setting up Lycoming’s comeback.

Lycoming freshman Kaden Majcher, a Warrior Run graduate, posted a 15-0 technical fall over Alexander Tyson at 125.

Penn College went 2-2 at the Rodarmel Duals. falling to Corland (30-6) and Lycoming (27-17) and beating King’s (25-19) and New Jersey CIty 929-22).

Ryan Berstler set the tone with a 17-0 technical fall at 125 pounds against King’s to put Penn College up, 5-0. Nicholas Semon’s tech fall against NJCU put the Wildcats ahead, 11-8.

Berstler also had a 6-3 decision against Lycoming for an early 3-0 lead.

• Bucknell defeated Buffalo at Sojka Pavilion in women’s basketball, 80-69. Cecelia Collins had a 21-point performance and both Taylor O’Brien and Carly Krsul had 17 points apiece. Krsul also had a double-double as she grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds.

Buffalo’s Summer Hemphill had a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double and Georgia Wolley came off the bench to have a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double. Buffalo also had 20 points come from starter Dyaisha Fair.

Bucknell led by 16 after the first quarter. Buffalo scored 29 in the third quarter to make it a 61-55 deficit heading in the fourth quarter, but the Bison (9-2) held off Buffalo (6-4) to seal the win.

Marly Walls led Bucknell with six assists.

The Bison were 5 of 10 from 3-point range, as Cecelia Collins had a team-high two.

• After hitting seven 3-pointers for the second straight game, senior Matt Ilodigwe earned the Lycoming College men’s basketball team’s second straight MAC Freedom Player of the Week award.

Ilodigwe, who hit seven 3-pointers and finished with 23 points in a 74-55 win over FDU-Florham last week, hit four in the first half and three more in the second in a 88-63 win over King’s on Saturday to lead the Warriors with a 21-point performance. He also chipped in a season-best seven rebounds to go with four assists in the win.

It is Ilodigwe’s second career weekly award, as he also earned MAC Commonwealth weekly award on Feb. 11, 2019, after he tied the school record by hitting 11 3-pointers in a 107-100 win over Hood College.

Ilodigwe joins junior Dyson Harward, who earned the award on Dec. 13, as Lycoming players that have earned honors from the MAC Freedom this year.

The Warriors get back on the court on Wednesday, Dec. 29, when they head to a tournament at the University of Mount Union.

Bucknell senior Andrew Funk has been selected as the GEICO Patriot League Player of the Week after a terrific performance in Saturday’s 82-70 home victory over La Salle.

Funk scored an efficient 22 points on 10-for-15 shooting from the field, including 2 for 3 from the 3-point arc. He scored seven straight points in less than a minute to stretch a one-point lead to eight in the first half, and the Bison led by at least five points for all but one possession the rest of the way.

The Patriot League’s leading scorer at 18.3 points per game, Funk topped the 20-point mark for the fourth time this season and seventh time in his career on Saturday. Bucknell’s lone senior is shooting 38.7% from 3-point range and 84.0 percent from the foul line this season. He also leads the conference in made 3-pointers per game (3.3) and minutes played per game (35.3).
