Aaron Akers enjoyed a career night and helped South Williamsport take a step toward making the playoffs as it defeated Montgomery, 55-46. Akers erupted for a career-high 18 points and also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, scoring nine points in the fourth quarter. Lee Habalar (16 points, 7 rebounds) and Ben Manning (13 points, 4 assists) also scored in double figures for South (9-8). Grant Bachman pulled down 11 rebounds and dealt four assists. Maurice Walters scored a season-high 18 points and added seven rebounds for Montgomery (9-8). Logan Almeida produced 12 points and six rebounds and Coltin Hans had seven boards.
Loyalsock’s Jaylen Andrews was another area player who produced a big performance. The sophomore guard scored a career-high 26 points and helped the defending Class AAA state champions defeat Central Columbia, 67-42. Loyalsock (15-3, 13-0 HAC-II) won its 11th straight game as it maintained a two-game lead in pursuit of a sixth straight league championship. Four players scored in double figures with Jaiden Ross (14), Nate Bauman (13) and Brendan Clark (10 points, 8 rebounds) joining Andrews. Gage Patterson fueled the defense with nine steals and dealt seven assists.
Montoursville won a second straight thriller, edging Selinsgrove, 44-43 and clinching a District 4 Class AAAA playoff spot. The Warriors (11-7) defeated Hughesville at the buzzer Monday and have won six straight games, including the last four on the road. John Schneider led the way with a game-high 17 points and eight different players scored. Montoursville has just one starter back from last year, but has won 11 of its last 14 games.
Fueled by a 24-point game from Isaiah Niemczyk and a 21-point performance from Cooper Kitchen, Canton defeated Sayre, 70-44. Canton (13-4) outscored Sayre, 31-4 in the third quarter. Caiden Williams added 12 points.
Despite a 30-point performance from McGwire Painter, Northeast Bradford defeated Cowanesque Valley 63-50. Northeast Branford played tight defense in the first half, allowing only single-digit scoring through the first two quarters for a 39-14 lead at the half.
• Freshman Mya Wetzel led the Lycoming College women's basketball team with six points and five rebounds against King's College, as it fell 75-38 in MAC Freedom action.
Sophomore Allison Butler and senior Emily Zoscin also each added six points, with Butler adding a steal and two rebounds and Zoscin with a steal and three rebounds. Junior Diana Rantz added two assists and nine rebounds.
King's jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the first six and a half minutes, but the Warriors scored seven straight points, with Butler hitting a jumper to close within a point with 22 seconds left in the first period. A 3-pointer just before the quarter ended started King's on a 24-6 run that occupied the rest of the half and gave King's a 37-19 lead at the break.
Sophomore Jessica Shaver led the Warriors in the second half with four points.
Lock Haven fell to visiting Indiana, 65-55, in PSAC play.
Following nearly three minutes of scoreless play to open the contest, Lock Haven got on the board first when a Brooke Lawyer 3-pointer gave the Bald Eagles a 3-0 lead with 7:24 to play in the opening frame.
Jaynelle Robinson led the way for the Bald Eagles, notching her seventh double-double of the year and sixth such performance in the last 11 outings. Her season-high 18 rebounds also marks her fourth straight game in double figures on the glass.
Parker added a team-high 19 points in the loss.
Junior Jasmine Hilton notched a 23-point, 12-rebound double-double to lead Mansfield to overtime with visiting Bloomsburg, but the Huskies drilled the dagger with two seconds remaining to exact Decker Gymnasium with a 57-55 PSAC victory.
The Mounties fall to 6-12 overall and 5-9 in the PSAC after nearly upsetting the third-place Huskies (14-8, 12-4 PSAC).
After closing regulation on an 8-2 run, the Huskies scored the first two baskets in overtime to take a 51-47 lead with 3:36 to go. Hilton scored the next four points of the game, highlighted by a converted 3-point play, to tie the game at 51 with 1:42 remaining.
Hilton finished 9 of 25 from the floor and pulled down six rebounds on both the offensive and defensive end to power the MU offense. Freshman Logan Nutt had a career night, finishing with a season-best 16 points and six rebounds. Whitfield added 11 points and seven rebounds, while senior Kira Merritt dished out a team-high five assists.
• Ryan Moffatt scored a career-high 24 points and hit six of his team's 14 3-pointers to help first-place Colgate rally for an 83-69 win over Bucknell in Patriot League men's basketball action.
Xander Rice scored 18 points, Andrew Funk had 17, and Elvin Edmonds IV chipped in 10 for the Bison (5-18, 2-9 PL), who stormed to an early 16-point lead. After starting the game 1-for-8 from 3-point range, Colgate (10-11, 6-2 PL) hit 13 of its next 19 to spark its comeback.
Much like the first meeting between the two teams at Sojka Pavilion two weeks ago, there were wild momentum swings throughout the contest. In that first game, the Bison trailed 18-2 early before making a big run to get back in it before Colgate pulled away late. This time Bucknell was on fire early, starting 9-for-13 from the field on the way to a stunning 27-11 lead.
Sophomore Mavin James posted a career-high 20 points and junior Dyson Harward posted a career-high 18 rebounds to lead Lycoming, which held King's to 33% shooting from the floor, to a 68-49 MAC Freedom win.
The Warriors (13-7 overall, 8-3 MAC Freedom) led by double figures for the whole second half and held a 45-24 advantage in rebounds and 14-4 in second-chance points, as they moved alone into second place in the MAC Freedom with five games remaining in the season.
James hit 8 of 9 shots from the field, including drilling four 3-pointers en route to his first 20-point game in college and high school teammate Harward surpassed his previous career-best in rebounds by grabbing five on the offensive glass and 13 on the defensive end to surpass his previous best of 17 set against Union in 2019. The 18 rebounds is the most in a game for a Warrior since Matt Stackhouse had 21 against Wilkes in 2002. He also added 13 points for his league-leading 11th double-double, the third-most in program history, and rejected three shots, all while crossing 700 points in his career
Junior Luke Finkbeiner hit a season-high four 3-pointers to finish with 12 points. Sophomore Steven Hamilton added eight points and seven assists and junior DeAundre Manuel added six points, nine rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Junior Mo Terry reached 600 career points, finishing with six to go with five rebounds.
Freshman forward Justice Smith set a Mansfield single-game record with a career-high 56 points to lead the Mounties to a 114-107 PSAC victory over Bloomsburg University.
Smith broke Jason Benson's previous record of 53 points set against West Virginia State in 2005.
Smith, who finished one assist shy of a triple-double, shot 19 of 26 from the floor, 15 of 20 from the charity stripe and 3 of 4 from three. Smith pulled in 12 rebounds and dished out a game-high 10 assists.
The Mounties, now winners of three straight, improve to 4-17 overall and 3-11 in conference play. The Huskies fall to 3-15, 2-12 PSAC.
After letting a late lead slip to force overtime, the Mounties scored the free period's opening points off the 51st of the game from Smith t0 lead, 100-98.
