Local roundup: Warrior Run grad Noah Hunt finishes fifth for Penn College wrestling at Mideast Regionals

Penn College sophomore Noah Hunt, a Warrior Run graduate, finished in fifth place at 141 pounds at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regionals.

The top three wrestlers in each weight class advanced to the NCAA Division III Championship March 11-12 in Cedar Rapids.

Hunt entered the tournament unseeded and rallied from deficits in in first two bouts Saturday to secure victories. Trailing 7-0 after two against SUNY Cortland’s Ryan Burgbacher, Hunt rallied with a flurry of offensive points and secured a 12-10 win with a takedown and two back points at the buzzer. Hunt was behind 2-0 against RIT’s Chris Horton in the quarterfinals before picking up a first period pin to punch his ticket to the semifinals.

Hunt fell to TCNJ’s Dom Difrancescantonio in a 7-0 decision in Sunday’s semifinal before Burgbacher got revenge against Hunt in the consolation semifinals with a first period pin. Hunt ended the day with a first period fall over Oneonta State’s Michael Blando in the to secure fifth.

Three other Penn College wrestlers earned wins during Saturday’s opening rounds. Patrick Snoke was 1-2 at 133, including a pin in 6:31 in the first round of consolations. Jesse Walker finished 1-2 at 165 with a fall in 2: 16 in the consolation first round and Garrett Storch earned a 7-3 decision in the 184-pound preliminary round before dropping his next two bouts.

• Penn College lost a doubleheader in college baseball to Stockton. Stockton won the first game in 11 innings, 5-4, and the second game in six innings, 1-0.

In the first game, Penn College’s Jake Wagner led the Wildcats with three hits while Jacob Carles and Brian Robinson each had two. Justin Porter threw five innings, not allowing a run and just one hit with five strikeouts.

In the second game, Penn College was held to just two hits as both Tristan Current and Cameron Dick had singles. Hughesville graduate Chance Webb earned the loss on the mound after allowing an earned run on three hits and three walks.

Lock Haven split with Saint Rose, winning the first contest, 4-3, before dropping the second, 11-7, at Newark, Delaware.

In the first game, the Bald Eagles held off Saint Rose late. Saint Rose scored three in the bottom of the seventh to close it to one run. Joe Shannon led the Bald Eagles with a 3 for 4 effort as he hit a double, home run and had two RBIs and two runs scored. Zach Kaatz also hit a double for the Bald Eagles.

Saint Rose struck early in the first game, scoring seven runs in the top of the first inning to put Lock Haven in a huge hole.

The Bald Eagles did collect 11 hits, however, as Gavin Troutman, Jake Mastillo and Garrett Nepert each had two hits. Mastillo and Shannon both had doubles and Justin Lichtenwalner added a triple for the Bald Eagles.

• Lock Haven’s softball team had a trip to Glenville, West Virginia, and finished the campaign 1-3. After beating West Virginia Wesleyan, 10-7, in the opener ,the Bald Eagles proceeded to lose to Clarion (9-8), Seton Hill (6-1) and Glenville State (5-1).

Warrior Run graduate Madison Waltman went 1-1 over the weekend, earning the win against West Virginia Wesleyan after pitching a full game with two strikeouts. Offensively in the first game, Delaney Good, Summer Peters and Rianna Trexler each had two RBIs.

The Bald Eagles collected 15 hits as Bella Schmitt, Sydney Arrigale, Haley Lestician and Mikayla Ruppert each had an RBI.

Lock Haven fell behind against Clarion in the first two innings, 6-6. The Bald Eagles eventually tied the game in the sixth inning, but came up just shy of rallying.

Peters had an RBI for the Bald Eagles in the 6-1 loss to Seton Hill to bring in the team’s lone run. Against Glenville State, Lestician had a fourth-inning solo home run, but it was one of just four hits for the Bald Eagles.

Lock Haven’s back in action in Winter Haven, Florida, for the PFX Tournament on March 11-15.

• The Bucknell men’s swimming and diving team scored a runner-up finish at the ECAC Championships.

With 390.5 points, the Bison finished behind only Patriot League champion Navy (767.5). They were bolstered by winning six silver medals over the course of the three-day meet, which helped them finish as the ECAC runners-up for the first time since 2012.

On Saturday, Justin DiSanto, Chris Fabian, John Gehrig and Chris Kopac put an exclamation mark on Bucknell’s strong performance by winning a silver medal in the 400 freestyle relay behind its second-fastest time in school history (2:57.36).

Fabian (100 backstroke), Gehrig (100 butterfly) and Kopac (400 IM), all 2021 All-Patriot League first team selections, previously won individual silver medals on Saturday. The Bison also saw the 800 freestyle relay team of Sean Quinn, Alec Baker, Kopac and Ed Park and the 400 medley relay team of Baker, Will Hedges, Fabian and Justin DiSanto swim to runner-up showings.

• Maddie Hartigan won a gold medal in the 100 freestyle on the ECAC Championships’ final day in women’s swimming. Hartigan, who previously won Patriot League gold in both the 500 freestyle and 1,650 freestyle, outraced the ECAC field with a time of 50.31.

She also teamed with Sabrina Vumbacco, Kayla Lichtner and Kendall Luecke for a bronze showing in the 400 freestyle relay, the three-day meet’s final event.

This is Hartigan’s second ECAC gold in the 100 freestyle, as she previously won this event with a time of 50.77 at the 2020 rendition.

The Bucknell women’s swimming & diving team ultimately finished fourth with 264.5 points. James Madison (695), host Navy (642.5) and Penn (462) were the top three teams.

Six Bison beyond Hartigan qualified for the finals as well. That group included 400 freestyle relay members Vumbacco, who took 11th in the 200 butterfly, and Lichtner, who went 12th in the 100 freestyle.

• The Lock Haven University lacrosse team scored 12 seconds into the contest and led 11-1 at halftime as the Bald Eagles rolled to a dominating, 15-4, non-conference victory over Ashland.

The win marked the first of the young season for Lock Haven.

Standout-goalkeeper Lauren Girardi made seven saves in the first half on the way to the win. LHU played three different goalkeepers and they led the way in the dominating defensive effort. Ashland was forced into 20 total turnovers and the Bald Eagles racked up 19 ground balls. Gracie Chaires had two ground balls and two caused-turnovers for Lock Haven.

• Riyana Owens finished second in the 60-meter dash and she scored in the 200-meter dash, as she led the way for the Lock Haven University women's indoor track and field team at the PSAC Championships.

In the finals at 60 meters, Owens ran 7.55 and was edged out by only California’s Divonne Franklin, who ran 7.54. For Owens, her time of 7.55 marked an NCAA Division II provisional mark and it once again broke her own school record.

Owens added an eighth-place finish at 200 meters.

Billie Jo Bollinger scored big for the Bald Eagles in the 60-meter hurdle finals. She was fourth with a career-best time of 9:12. Cadie Kiser placed sixth at 3,000 meters with a time of 10:30.71 and Morgan Perry finished ninth with a strong run of 10:36.58.

• The Lock Haven University men's track and field team returned to the PSAC Indoor Championships for the first time since 2017 and it was Ryan Miller who led the way for the Bald Eagles as he won an individual title for Lock Haven.

Miller took home the individual conference crown at 400 meters. His time of 49.02 bested the field in the finals and put 10 team-points on the board for Lock Haven.

Miller returned from his win at 400 meters to take second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.84.

Gage Krall turned in a strong mile-3K double today and John Davern put together two outstanding races in back-to-back days for Lock Haven yesterday and today in the 5K and 3K, respectively.

Krall scored eight points, thanks to a second-place finish in the mile. He ran a sensational time of 4:23.84, which put him second of 17. Krall returned from his strong run in the mile and added a second-place finish in the 3,000-meter run. Krall ran 8:38.57, while John Davern capped a strong two days with a fourth-place showing the 3K (8:48.38).

• In women’s lacrosse, Lock Haven cruised past Ashland, 15-4, thanks to seven goals in the first quarter and an 11-1 lead after two. Caitlin Morrow scored four goals, Abby Katrinak added three and Josey Shaffer, Zoe Waddell and Casey Hibbard all scored twice.
