With the racing season in full swing finally, it was a pretty busy Easter weekend. Anthony Macri made it a two-fer by winning at Williams Grove on Friday and Port Royal on Saturday. Briggs Danner and Dave Grube also came away winners of the special event at the Grove.
The All Stars Circuit of Champions sprint cars will be raced Friday for the annual Tommy Hinnershitz Classic. The competitors are primed for the first big race of the season at Williams Grove Speedway for the 410 sprint cars Friday night at 7:30 pm. The annual Tommy Classic will be the first race of the season in the Hoosier Diamond Series at Williams Grove, paying $6,000 to win the 30-lap affair.
The race is meant to honor Oley's Tommy Hinnershitz _ known as "The Flying Dutchman" -- who holds the distinction of winning the first race held at historic Speedway on May 21, 1939. Kyle Larson pocketed the Tommy Classic loot in 2020 and again last season while on his way to claiming the 2021 NASCAR season title. No one has won more Tommy Classic races than local Lance Dewease who is a three-time victor.
The traveler's last win at the track was in September of 2020. So the question is has a new winless streak begun for the All Stars at Williams Grove Speedway? The previous streak lasted roughly 35 events. Defending series titlist Tyler Courtney of Indianapolis will lead the All Stars into Williams Grove on Friday after just sweeping a pair of races at Attica, Ohio.
Others expected to invade include Cory Eliason, Hunter Schuerenberg, Justin Peck, Zeb Wise, Kyle Reinhardt and more.
Peck already has an unsanctioned win at the track this season after taking the Williams Grove season opener on March 18. The local fight will be put up by the likes of Lance Dewease, Danny Dietrich and Anthony Macri among others.
Macri picked up his second 410 sprint car feature over Dylan Cisney and Steve Buckwalter. The win was worth $4,000 and came by a margin of 1.146 seconds after starting eighth. Macri also set the new 25-lap track record along the way with the feature events being completed in just Seven minutes and 17 seconds. With rain in the forecast, the track hosted three divisions to the Juniata County oval and were able to complete a total of eight heat races, a non stop feature and warm ups in just under one hour and 45 minutes.
There were no cautions throughout the entire night, but it still wasn't enough to beat Mother Nature completely as the super late model and limited late model features were rescheduled after rain hit the Speedway minutes after the 410 sprint car feature was completed.
Also having an exceptional year so far Danny Dietrich's third win of the season came with a new 30-lap track record. Dietrich ran 30 non-stop laps in just 7:44.249, besting the previous record set by Brian Montieth in 2012 of 7:52.696, by nearly 8.5 seconds. The top four feature finishers (Dietrich, Devon Borden, Alan Krimes and Austin Bishop) all bested the previous record. Saturday's win was Dietrich's third in the pigeon hills this year.
While the All-Stars will be at Port Royal next week, Lincoln will be back in action with "Wheel of Fortune" night featuring 410 sprints, Central PA Legends and 358 late models. Racing starts at 7:30 p.m.
At BAPS Motor Speedway, Russ Mitten had a little extra pressure on his shoulders when he rolled out for the main event. Mitten drew the pole for the 25-lap affair, which meant all eyes were on him to back up his early-season triumph. Lose, and there is extra disappointment by fans and his guys in the pit area.
Mike Schane shined in 602 modified action, leading the final 24 laps of the 25-lap A-Main to claim the victory. In Central PA Legends action, Jorjie Sweger won a fierce battle with Bob Stough to earn the victory in the 15-lap feature. Patrick McClane led every lap of the extreme stock feature. In the scramble car main event, Roy Denike took top honors over Julio Perez.
