ALTOONA — For the second consecutive year Central Mountain boys tennis player David Linsday has won a District 6 Class AAA title. Lindsay, a sophomore, defeated Hollidaysburg's Nathaniel Barton, 6-0, 6-0, on Wednesday morning in Altoona to advance to the state tournament.
"David played much better today than he did the first day of the tournament. I believe that the different surface was uncomfortable for him yesterday, but he adjusted nicely today and played a wonderful match against a quality opponent," Wildcats coach Pete Wert said.
Barton is who Lindsay defeated last year in the district final.
Lindsay will face the District 3 runner-up on May 27 in the first round of the Class AAA tournament at the Hershey Racquet Club. The first round and quarterfinals are set for May 27 and the semifinals, third-place match and finals are scheduled for May 28.
The sophomore's accomplishments speak for themselves as he became the first ever Wildcat to capture a district title last year when he did it as a freshman. In Wert's eyes, what makes Lindsay so dominant is his ability to balance emotion.
"He controls his frustrations well during a match and can battle through some difficult situations that would bother other players. He is very much in control of his game and plays like a veteran," Wert said.
According to Wert, Lindsay has made physical strides in the past year and will look to land on the podium at states.
"He is a little bigger and stronger this season and it remains to be seen how he will play against the best the state has to offer. We are hopeful that he can get through his first two matches at states so that he can be somewhere on the podium at the end of the tournament," Wert said.
