Local roundup: Loyalsock baseball defeats Bloomsburg 15-3 in 5 innings
Moxen Cotter went 2 for 3 with a double and Cooper Larson hit two singles as Loyalsock cruised past Bloomsburg, 15-3, in five innings in baseball. Kaden Rodarmel, Colin Berger and Alec Kulp combined for a one-hitter for the Lancers.
Hayden Ward threw a brilliant two-hit shutout and Weston Bellows produced both Canton hits as the Warriors blanked Cowanesque Valley, 2-0. Ward threw 60 of 86 pitches for strikes and allowed just three baserunners. McGwire Painter and Jordan Vargeson combined on a two-hitter for CV and struck out eight.
Isaac Keane drove in three runs and threw a complete game, helping Wellsboro defeat North Penn-Mansfield, 7-4 and improve to 3-0. Dylan Abernathy went 2 for 3 for Wellsboro, while Hunter Thompson and Alex Davis each had two hits for North Penn-Mansfield (2-2).
Naz Smith, JerVal Weeks-Shuler and Ryan Thompson all had two hits and Naseer Dymeck threw well in relief as St. John Neumann defeated Sugar Valley, 18-7 in five innings. Weeks-Shuler drove in three runs, Smith scored three times and Thompson twice as Neumann (1-1) erased an early 4-3 deficit. Matthew Harbach was 1 for 1 with two RBIs and Neumann scored 10 runs over the last two innings.
• Natalie Bennett went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs and Jocelyn Jean (2 for 3) and Kristen George (2 for 3) each had a double as Montoursville collected 11 hits in an 11-0 win over Hughesville in softball in just five innings.
Loyalsock softball erupted for 16 hits and made an early-season statement, going to Bloomsburg and winning 16-1 in five innings in a showdown between the last two District 4 Class AAA champions. Marissa Helmrich was a force, throwing a one-hitter, striking out nine and going 3 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs. She was one of five players who produced at least two hits for the Lancers (2-0). Kathryn Schluter went 4 for 4 with four RBIs; Anna Luxenberger 3 for 4 with four RBIs and Allyia Kennedy 2 for 4 with a home run, triple and three RBIs.
Kaelyn Watson and Valandra McHenry combined on a four-hitter, helping Warrior Run defeat Southern Columbia, 2-1. Watson threw six strong innings for the win and McHenry earned the save in relief. Liona Dion went 1 for 2 with an RBI for Warrior Run and Emma Kaufman was 1 for 2 with a run.
• Williamsport defeated Mifflinburg, 5-0. Kyle Shuler earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, Shreshth Singh won, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, and Abheet Sarker picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.
In doubles competition, Evan Beiter and Ben Manetta won a three-set contest, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles.
Jersey Shore fell in a close contest with Danville, 3-2. Jackson Stemler earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles. The Bulldogs’ Connor Cornelius also won at No. 3 singles in a three-set contest, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Loyalsock blanked Bloomsburg, 5-0. In singles competition, Jett Pulizzi, Logan Hammond and Jackson Ellis won at Nos. 1-3 singles, respectively. Pulizzi won, 6-1, 6-1 and Hammond earned a 6-3, 6-4 win. At No. 3 singles, Ellis won, 6-2, 6-3.
Montoursville defeated Milton, 5-0. Jared Matlack beat Trace Witter, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Tyler Gilbert earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles against Luke Embeck. In doubles competition, Noah Shaffer and Greyson Simms won, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.
Hughesville fell to Lewisburg, 5-0, to drop to 4-2. Eddie Monaco won at No. 1 singles against Mikey Dylina, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4. At No. 3 singles, Greyson Azeredo beat Austin McKeon, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.
Wellsboro earned a 5-0 win against Towanda. At No. 1 doubles, the team of Aiden Gehman and Hayne Webster had a three-set victory, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Liam Manning won at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4.
Central Mountain defeated Shikellamy, 4-1. Asher Talbot and Nate Brinker won at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, 6-0, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles competition, Jackson Walker and Leisher Gugino earned a 6-0, 6-1 win against Fernando Nunez and Julian Derr-Rosins. Joe Caimi and Lucas Porter won for the Wildcats at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-0.
• Lewisburg defeated Danville in girls track and field, 100-50. Siena Brazier earned a win in the 300 hurdles with a time of 50.65 seconds, and earned a win in the 100 hurdles in 16.89.
The Green Dragons’ Hazel Buonopane was a two-time winner as well, earning a win in the shot put thanks to a throw of 26 feet, and then throwing the javelin 87-5.
North Penn-Mansfield won a tri-meet against Canton and Meadowbrook Christian. Kendall Kitchen won the pole vault, 100-meter dash and 400-meter dash for the Warriors.
Williamson won a dual meet against Wellsboro, 87-62. Chelsea Hungerford won the 100-yard hurdles, 300-yard hurdles and long jump for Williamson.
• Lewisburg defeated Danville in boys track and field, 89-61. Thomas Hess ran a 54.09 to win the 400 by nearly two seconds. He then earned a win in the 800 in 2:06.00, edging teammate Jacob Hess by a second.
The Green Dragons’ Julien Mercado-Bonanno and Tyler Kitchens finished 1-2, respectively, in both the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Mercado-Bonanno won the 110 hurdles with a time of 17.71 and the 300 hurdles in 44.27.
Another multiple winner was Lewisburg’s Simon Stumbris, who cleared 5 feet, 10 inches in the high jump before winning the long jump with a distance of 18-6 1/2. He also earned a win in the triple jump with a leap of 39-10 1/2, winning by just an inch.
North Penn-Mansfield defeated Canton and Meadowbrook Christian in a trie-meet. Isaiah Niemczyk won the triple jump, 400-meter dash, long jump and the 200-meter dash for the Warriors.
Williamson defeated Wellsboro in a dual meet, 105-45. Jack Poirier won the 100 and 200-yard dashes for Williamson, while Duncan Kerr won the 110 and 300-yard hurdles.
• Junior Payton Whary fired a three-hit shutout to lead the Lycoming softball team to a 6-0 win over Albright in the nightcap and senior Angie King went 6 for 6 in the doubleheader, as Lycoming split the games after falling in the first game, 2-1.
King went 4 for 4 with a run and two RBI and both senior Kacee Reitz, a Milton graduate, and sophomore Kylee Segraves, a Williamsport graduate, had two hits and two runs. Junior Mackenzie Glosek also added two hits, a double and two RBI.
Penn College swept Penn State Harrisburg in a doubleheader, 2-1 and 10-0. In the second game, the Wildcats collected 11 hits while Kyla Benner limited PSU Harrisburg to just two singles through five innings of work.
Olivia Hemstock went 3 for 3 wtih a double, triple and three RBIs. Jordan Specht was 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs as well.
• Lock Haven split with Indiana (Pa.), losing the first game, 13-1, before rebounding with a 12-1 win in game two in college baseball. In the first game, Garrett Nepert was 2 for 2 with a double and RBI. In the second game, Gavin Troutman went 3 for 5 with a double and three RBIs and Blaise Zeiders and Zach Kaatz each had a double. Nick White added three RBIs.
Mansfield senior Samuel Freedman hit a grand slam to cap off a 12-8 victory over Gannon University in game one of a non-conference doubleheader. The Mounties fell in the nightcap, 9-0.
After taking an 8-6 lead with two runs earlier in the fifth inning, Freedman blasted an opposite field homer with the bases loaded to extend the Mounties (11-15 overall) lead to 12-6, ultimately putting the game out of reach.
The Golden Knights (14-7 overall) scored two runs in the top of the sixth, but junior Josh Colon was able to shut the door in relief to seal the game-one victory for MU.
Freedman, who drove in five runs on the afternoon, hit his fourth home run of the year and his second big fly in as many games. Senior Assaf Lowengart scored twice and drove in a run to start the rally in the bottom of the sixth, while junior Brittain Shander reached base in all five at bats, adding a double and three runs scored.
• Six players each tallied multiple goals to lead the Lock Haven women’s lacrosse team to a 16-2 victory over Edinboro. With the victory, Lock Haven extends it winning streak with the Fighting Scots to 13 games in a series that dates back to 2009.
The Bald Eagles wasted little time getting on the board in the midweek showdown. Casey Hibbard needed just 28 seconds to notch her 12th goal of the season and put LHU out in front by a 1-0 tally.
• The Lock Haven women’s tennis team dropped a PSAC clash with rival Bloomsburg, as the Huskies picked up the win, 6-1. Montoursville graduate Maddy Reeves earned yet another win at the No. 1 singles spot. She knocked off Bloomsburg’s top singles player 7-5 and 6-4 to earn the sweep victory.
Lycoming suffered their first loss of the spring portion of the season, as Misericordia posted a 9-0 MAC Freedom win. The Warriors had won five in a row before the loss Tuesday, the program’s longest winning streak since 2001.
Freshman Rei Saar, a Montoursville graduate, faced off with her high school doubles partner, Lydia Barbour, falling 6-1, 7-5. The pair won two District 4 doubles titles together.
• The Bucknell men’s tennis team made the short trip over to Bloomsburg on Tuesday afternoon and returned home with a 5-2 victory over the Huskies. Harrison Gold, Nick Mueller, Tim Zelikovsky, and Per Astrom were all double winners as the Bison swept the three doubles matches and took four of the six singles bouts.
Gold, who was named the Patriot League Player of the Week earlier in the day, was a 6-2 winner alongside Charlie Nordahl at No. 1 doubles, and then Gold rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at first singles.
Zelikovsky and Mueller won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles, and Astrom and Ink Chen teamed for a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
