Local roundup: Montoursville baseball tops defending HAC-I champ Shikellamy
In baseball, Maddix Dalena dominated in relief, striking out 13 in five scoreless innings as Montoursville defeated defending HAC-I champion Shikellamy, 3-2. The Warriors (4-1) won their third straight and rallied from a 2-0 first-inning deficit, scoring a run in the first and two in the second. Dalena allowed just two singles and also was 1 for 2. Cameron Francis doubled and James Batkowski hit a go-ahead RBI single after Matthew Conklin singled and stole second. Marco Pulizzi added a hit and two steals.
• Hughesville broke out in a big way Saturday, thumping Sugar Valley in both games of a doubleheader in high school softball. The Spartans took the first game 16-0 in three innings before completing the sweep with a 21-1 win in three innings.
Ella Breneisen produced a monster performance in the second contest, going 4 for 4 with two home runs, seven RBIs and four runs. Sara Stroup homered in the opening game, going 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Hughesville scored 16 runs in two at-bats in that first game with McKenna Sones and Madeline Miller each going 2 for 2. Sones tripled and drove in three runs while Megan Bryant earned the win, striking out four in two innings.
Tori Barto had a big day, going 4 for 5 with a triple and two RBIs. She was part of a 16-hit attack in the second game. Bryant, Alaina Hicks, Lauren Mook and Annaka Bruder also had two hits each. Mook and Bruder doubled and Loralie Bennett scattered three hits to earn the win.
Hughesville scored in each of its five at-bats Saturday, producing 10 and 11-run innings in each contest.
• Penn College swept Lancaster Bible in a softball doubleheader, 7-1 and 2-0, to improve to 18-6. The sweep increased Penn College’s winning streak to a program-record 11.
Montoursville graduate Madison Shaffer went 3 for 3 with a double and RBI in the second game.
In the second game, Kyla Benner threw a complete game, yielding just two singles. In the first game, Montoursville graduate MacKenzie Weaver threw the complete game to improve to 9-2.
Kyle Benner went 2 for 2 in game one, and Jaylynn Cochran and Hailey DeBrody each hit a double.
Lock Haven split a doubleheader with Millersville, 9-1 and 5-1, to improve to 11-16. In the first game, Warrior Run graduate Madi Waltman earned the start for the Bald Eagles.
Amanda Criss went 2 for 2 in the first game and followed with a 2 for 3 performance in game two with an RBI and run.
Riley McClellan was 2 for 3 with an RBI in game two, and Bella Schmitt had a double.
Jada Schellhammer allowed one run on seven hits in a complete game effort. The Tamaqua fanned four batters and needed a mere 69 pitches to earn her second win of the year.
Senior Lacey O’Donnell notched her 100th career hit in game two of a PSAC doubleheader at Shepherd. The Mounties fell, 6-1 in the opener, before dropping the night cap, 10-0 (five innings).
O’Donnell, who leads the team with a .338 (23 for 68) batting average, took just 87 games to reach the century mark in career hits. O’Donnell has a base knock in 13 games this season, while collecting multiple hits in eight games.
O’Donnell poked a single through the left side during her final at-bat in game two to secure the milestone.
The Rams, however, put up 10 runs in five innings while holding the Mountaineers scoreless to secure the run-rule victory.
• A four-run sixth inning by Penn State Abington helped the Nittany Lions pull away in a 10-7 win against Penn College in baseball.
Cameron Dick went 4 for 5 with three doubles and had four RBIs for the Wildcats, which out-hit PSU Abington, 13-12.
The loss drops Penn College to 15-13 overall. PSU Abington had three players with multiple hits.
Lock Haven postponed its scheduled game against Mansfield due to weather. No makeup date has been determined yet.
• Penn College scored 10 first-quarter goals and added eight in the second en route to a 22-13 win against Wells in men’s lacrosse. Quinn Caviola scored four goals and Guerin San Augustin and James Thatcher each scored three times.
Andrew Osterman, Nathan Hugo, James Conway and Brendan Kuczma added two each. Wells’ 13 goals came from two players.
• Kendall Goldblum scored the tiebreaking goal with 1 minute, 26 seconds remaining to lift American to a tight 12-11 victory over Bucknell in Patriot League women’s lacrosse action.
Taylor Kopan scored four goals, Allie Boyce had three, and Taylor McClain tallied a goal and four assists for the Bison, who led for much of the game only to fall victim to the Eagles’ fourth-quarter rally.
Bucknell fell to 6-7 overall and 3-3 in the Patriot League, while American moved to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in league play. The Eagles leapfrogged the Bison into fourth place in the Patriot League standings.
• Penn College fell to PSU Abington, 7-2, in men’s tennis. The Wildcats are 1-3 in the United East and 6-5 overall. Tucker Phillippe-Johansson won at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-4, and teamed with Paul Langbein for an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles.
Bucknell improved to 4-2 in Patriot League play with a 7-0 whitewash of Lafayette.
Led by Harrison Gold and Nick Mueller in the No. 1 spot, the Bison swept the three doubles matches to take the point. Bucknell then captured all six singles matches in straight sets, never ceding more than three games in any set, en route to its 24th straight dual win over the Leopards.
Gold, Mueller, Michael Owen, Tim Zelikovsky, Nicolas Grunig, and Charlie Nordahl all won in both singles and doubles for the Bison. Zelikovsky’s 6-2, 6-2 victory over Charles Keller at No. 4 singles was his 13th consecutive singles win. He is now 14-4 in dual matches and 10-1 in the No. 4 spot in the lineup.
• Lock Haven’s women’s tennis team dropped an away match to Shippensburg, 6-1, in PSAC action. Lock Haven fought hard in doubles action, picking up a victory at No. 2. The tandem of Christy McLean and Delani Wolever cruised to a 6-2 victory but the host Raiders took the doubles team point with victories at No. 1 and a LHU forfeit at No. 3 doubles.
Williamsport graduate Mia Shuler picked up the lone win for the Bald Eagles in singles action. Shuler turned in a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at No. 2 singles to secure her sixth victory of the season in dual match action.
PSU Abington defeated Penn College, 9-0, to drop the Wildcats to 2-7 and 1-3 in the United East.
• A record-breaking pole vault performance from Katie Jones highlighted the final day of a three-day meet Saturday as the Penn State track and field teams wrapped up the Bison Outdoor Challenge.
Already the current indoor program record holder for pole vault, Jones — a South Williamsport graduate — continued her record-breaking 2022 season by shattering the outdoor program record in the event after clearing a height of 4.28 meters (14 feet, 0.5 inches). Her historic mark surpassed the previous best mark of 4.17 (13-8 1/4) set in 2021 by her teammate Loyalsock graduate Hailey Zurich, who finished Saturday’s meet right behind her in second place.
Lock Haven’s women’s track and field team turned in another strong effort at the Bison Outdoor Classic meet hosted by Bucknell University.
Standout distance runner Morgan Perry highlighted the action on night one with her sensational 17:37.48 5,000 meter run. Perry picked her way through the field in the waning laps of the race to run a PSAC No. 2 mark and the fourth fastest time in LHU history.
Kiersten Lloyd made her collegiate 3,000 meter debut and ran well, breaking eleven minutes as she hit a 78-second last quarter, finishing in tenth with a final time of 10:57.56.
Freshman Lizzie Ostrander came away from Saturday’s 800 meter run with her best time of the season. Her 2:25.94 final moves her to a coveted PSAC top-16 mark at time of press.
Phenom hurdler Billie Jo Bollinger performed well in both the 100 meter hurdles and 400 meter hurdles. In the 100 meter hurdles, Bollinger set a personal best 14.75-seconds which marks a PSAC No. 2. Later, she finished fifth in a stacked 400mH field that included 2021 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships bronze medalist Antoinette Bradley of Penn State. Her 1:03.81 was also the fastest time amongst Division II finishers.
