Montgomery catcher Shelby McRae produced what would make a good week-long performance in just one memorable inning Tuesday at Millville, helping power her team to a 17-0, six-inning win. McRae belted two home runs, a grand slam, and a three-run shot, in the sixth inning as Montgomery busted the game open and scored 11 times.
Faith Persing was as potent in the circle as McRae was at the plate, throwing a no-hitter in the rain and striking out 16. Persing recorded 17 of the 18 outs herself, also catching a pop-up as Montgomery (6-1) won its sixth straight game entering Thursday's showdown against undefeated Bucktail.
• In boys track and field, Wellsboro finished second in a quad meet with 81 points, behind Northeast Bradford's 84. In third was Towanda with 78 and Sayre was fourth with 25.
Wellsboro freshman Micah Vickery won the 300 hurdles with a time of 49.60, winning the race by just 0.30 seconds over Towanda's Dan Storrs, and also took third in the 110 hurdles with a time of 20.10.
Jack Poirier won the long jump with a distance of 17-8 3/4 and teammate Aiden Gehman won the triple jump (37-11). Gehman also was a second-place finisher in the long jump with a leap of 17-7 and Wellsboro freshman Alex Citrino was third (17-3).
The Green Hornets' Noah Morey and Watson Feil finished 1-2 in the javelin with throws of 121-1 and 115-10, respectively.
• Wellsboro's girls track and field team won a quad meet (103) against Towanda (49), Northeast Bradford (48) and Sayre (14).
Wellsboro's Madeline Gage won the 1,600 with a time of 6:25.60. She also finished third in the 800 in 3:03.70 as teammate Rosalind King was second (3:03.10).
Wellsboro freshman Annika Gehman won the long jump with a distance of 13 feet, 7 inches. Kallie Baltzley took third (12-7). Wellsboro's Emma Owlett also was a first-place finisher after clearing 7-0 in the pole vault. Emma Coolidge won the javelin by throwing 100-7, winning by roughly nine feet.
• In softball, Montgomery routed Benton, 16-0 in three innings. Jenna Waring earned the win in the circle for the Red Raiders with five strikeouts and no walks. The Tigers were also held hitless.
• In boys tennis, Williamsport swept Shikellamy, 5-0. Kyle Shuler, Shreshth Singh and Evan Beiter earned singles wins. Owen Kaar and Sam Radulski, as well as Jack Compton and Noah McKenzie, won in doubles.
