Montoursville defeated South Williamsport, 5-2, in an elimination game of the District 12 junior baseball tournament. Montoursville scored four runs in the second inning to take an early lead.
"It was a good competitive game, both teams played well and it was an even matchup," Montoursville manager Bruce Jones said. "No one should hang their heads. We got a couple more critical things that went our way."
Chase Jones had a single in the second that helped spark Montoursville as Montoursville ended up scoring four runs. Jones so far has three hits through two games played. Austin Davidson and Gabe Moser each recorded singles as well.
South Williamsport was led by Charles Plummer, who had a huge pinch-hit double in the sixth to drive in two runs and cut the deficit down to three. Montoursville out-hit South, 8-5.
Montoursville's Trent Gene earned the win, throwing 95 pitches to reach the seventh inning with one out before Gabe Moser came in during relief and closed the game out to seal the victory.
Montoursville advances to face either GSV or East Lycoming in another elimination game on Thursday at Montoursville.
The District 12 junior baseball championship game is scheduled for Monday at Montoursville.
• In the District 12 minor baseball tournament, Keystone opened play with a 15-9 win against South Williamsport to advance to Thursday's winners' bracket semifinal against Montoursville at Hepburn Lycoming. The loss drops South Williamsport into an elimination game at Loyalsock.
• East Lycoming earned an 8-4 win against Jersey Shore/GSV in a District 12 9-11 baseball elimination game to keep its season going. With the win, East Lycoming advances to Thursday's losers' bracket final against Loyalsock at Williamsport Area.
The District 12 championship game will see either East Lycoming or Loyalsock face Keystone at Volunteer Stadium on Friday evening.
• In the District 12 major baseball tournament, Montoursville edged GSV in a close contest in an elimination game, 3-2, to advance to Thursday's losers' bracket final. Montoursville will play either Keystone or Muncy.
Montoursville's Elijah Eck and Cy Heddings outdueled Jersey Shore's Carter Rhinehart and Nolan Pauling. Eck and Heddings struck out 10 and Rhinehart and Pauling struck out six. Jersey Shore-GSV’s Conner Winters opened the top of the third inning reaching on an error, went to second on a passed ball and scored on Louden Spotts single. Montoursville then loaded the bases with only one out and Eck closed the door with two strikeouts.
In the third, Carter Rhinehart hit a towering home run. After that hit, Eck and Heddings shut the door on Jersey Shore/GSV.
Down 2-0 going into the bottom of the fourth, Montoursville erupted for their three runs. Emerson Lehman opened the fourth with a walk. After a groundout, Bryce Parker singled, getting Lehman to third. Noah Clayton then grounded out bring home the first run. Elijah Eck walked and then Cole Weaver knocked in Cam DeNune (pinch running for Parker) with a single setting the stage for Cy Heddins blast to the right center field fence driving in Eck with a double.
Jersey Shore-GSV was led by Carter Rhinehart (1 for 3, home run), Louden Spotts (1 for 3, RBI) and Jake Bressler (1 for 3). Conner Winters also scored a run for Jersey Shore-GSV.
The District 12 final is scheduled for Friday evening at Volunteer Stadium. Montoursville is looking to win its first District 12 title in the major division since 2014. Keystone will be eyeing its first title since it won back-to-back in 2018-19. Muncy has never won a District 12 championship.
