Sophomore Sydney Sellers scored twice to lead the Lycoming College women's soccer team in a 5-0 shutout of SUNY Delhi on Sunday.
The Warriors (5-0 overall) improved on their best start in program history and have won five straight games for just the third time in program history, tying runs of five straight wins from 2021 and 2010. The Broncos fell to 1-2-2.
Three of the team's five goals were tallied off corner kicks, set up by first-year Natalie Bates, as Bates became the 12th Warrior to post three assists in one game.
Two of those goals were scored by Sellers. Her first was goal three for the Warriors at 55:44 in the second half, where she was situated in the center of the goal. Sellers scored three minutes later on another corner by Bates, after senior Bridgett Maaloum caught the ball just inside the box and passed to Sellers at the right goal post.
Bucknell used a sensational all-around effort to make a little history on Sunday at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Backed by six saves from goalkeeper Jenna Hall, the Bison kept a clean sheet against No. 17 West Virginia and finished in a scoreless draw, marking the team's first-ever point against a nationally ranked opponent.
The Bison are now 3-3-1 on the season with the start of Patriot League play coming up on Friday at Navy. West Virginia, which already had a win and a draw against ranked teams this season, fell to 3-2-3.
"I'm so happy with the passion and heart that the whole team showed today," said Bucknell coach Kelly Cook. "We executed the game plan and found a way to grind out a tough tie against an experienced, ranked team. Our defense was awesome from start to finish. Jenna Hall made some good saves and was very aggressive coming off her line to clean up some plays, and the two center backs Brooke Tracey and Olivia DeConinck had unreal games."
West Virginia finished with a 13-7 shot advantage, but the Bison were able to generate two of the game's better scoring chances.
• A goal in the 10th minute from Rowan University was enough to send the Lycoming College men's soccer team to its first defeat of the season, 1-0, to wrap up the Jimmy Mills Tournament.
The Profs (3-2-1 overall) scored on a long shot from Cole Hayman that was assisted by Chad Yates.
The Warriors (2-1-2 overall) had four shots and five corner kicks in the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nick Wilke made five saves in net and Chay Kaplan earned the shutout for the Profs.
• Behind late heroics, the Lock Haven field hockey team (5-0) kept their undefeated season alive with a 2-1 win over non-conference opponent Central Michigan University.
The 5-0 start for the Bald Eagles is the programs best since 2015, when LHU opened the season at 6-0.
Lock Haven controlled the nearly the entire first half, and held a commanding 16-1 lead in shots. However, in the second quarter the Chippewas found a goal from a penalty corner to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, Central Michigan looked poise to pull off the upset until Constanza Lopez Zabala knocked in a perfect cross from Amy Stevens to knot the game up at 1-1 with just under 14 minutes to play.
As the clock ticked under ten minutes to play, the Bald Eagles won a penalty corner and Jazmin Palma capitalized with a laser shot past the keeper to put The Haven ahead 2-1 after a well-worked routine with Stevens, who earned assists on both of the LHU goals.
• The Lock Haven women's tennis team kicked off the 2022-23 season owith a successful day one of the Bloomsburg Invitational, but Sunday's closing day of tennis was canceled because of rain and an unfavorable forecast.
In doubles action, Olivia Anastos, a Central Mountain graduate, picked up an 8-6 win over Bloomsburg, and finished the day at 1-1 in flight three.
Anastos was also strong in singles action and defeated Bloomsburg's Juliana Kim 4-0, 4-0 along with Sophie Lanius of Millersville 4-1, 3-5 & 10-8. Anastos was 2-0 on the day and was set for the 1st place match in flight five today before the rain cancelation.
