Local roundup: Montoursville girls tennis now 7-1 after beating Loyalsock

Montoursville's Kara Mann earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against Anna Hall to help Montoursville beat rival Loyalsock, 5-0, on Wednesday in girls tennis.

Alaina Marchioni won at No. 2 singles for Montoursville against Maddy Hall, 6-1, 6-0 and Katelyn Good won at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-2, against Izzy Dadzie.

Montoursville's doubles teams of Erin Deljanovan and Jill Stone (No. 1) and Kendall Simms and Randi McKenna (No. 2) both picked up wins as well, 6-0, 6-4 and 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, respectively.

The win puts Montoursville at 7-1.

Hughesville defeated Lewisburg, 4-1. Sarah Buck earned a 6-0, 6-0 straight-set win at No. 1 singles, and Kylie Kilgore (6-3, 6-1) and Annaka Bruder (6-1, 6-1) won at Nos. 2-3 singles, respectively.

Montgomery defeated Wellsboro, 3-2. Hannah Nuss of Wellsboro won at No. 1 singles over Samantha Guyer, 0-6, 6-3, 6-3. Montgomery's lone win in singles competition came at No. 3 singles when Falin Reynolds beat Kailey Zuchowski, 6-0, 6-0.

The Red Raiders swept the doubles competition.

Lewisburg's win came at No. 2 doubles where Erin Lowthert and Vivian Vance won in three sets over Georgia Randall/Maya Snyder, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.

Williamsport blanked Milton, 5-0. Abby Robertson picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles against Brooklyn Wade. In doubles competition, Emlyn Kinley and Breanna Chicas won for the Millionaires at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-4 over Abbey Kitchen and Kyleigh Snyder.

Jersey Shore continued its outstanding start to the season by improving to 11-0 with a 5-0 win over St. John Neumann.

Peyton Dincher won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles for the Bulldogs and Celia Shemory (No. 2) and Ella Gerst (No. 3) both had straight set, 6-0, 6-0 victories.

At No. 1 doubles, Rahel Hartman and Breanna Porter won, 6-1, 6-0, over Layla Harris and Emma Gallew.

Central Mountain beat Danville, 3-2. Claire Long won at No. 1 singles for Central Mountain over Sarah Bhanushali, 7-5, 6-1, and Teresa Temple picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles.

Bucktail defeated Wellsboro, 5-0. Kayla Probert picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles and Alexis Lowery won, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. In doubles competition, Bucktail’s Giada DeMarte and Makenna Stone won, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles.

• Ben Manning scored the game's only goal as South Williamsport won a Mid-Penn contest against Muncy, 1-0. The Mounties limited Muncy to just two shots on goal as Muncy's Eli Slamka had six saves.

Wellsboro’s Jack Poirier and Caden Smith both scored and Sam Rudy and Poirier had assists in Wellsboro’s exciting 2-1 overtime win against Athens. Athens led 1-0 in the first before Wellsboro tied it up.

Williamsport picked up a huge win at Midd-West by defeating the Mustangs, 1-0, as Connor Poole scored the winning goal. The Millionaires' defense and goalie Sam Radulski played well in not allowing a goal.

• Mackenzie Lopez and Ryen Roush each scored as Milton defeated Mount Carmel, 2-0, in girls soccer. Alayna Chappell had an assist and in goal, Mo Reiner recorded seven saves for the shutout win.

Lydia Earnest scored twice and Bryn Jacopetti had a goal and assist as Montoursville defeated Jersey Shore, 5-1. Emma Cline had a goal and assist and Nyla Kutney added a goal. Jersey Shore's goal came from Devon Walker with an assist by Ali Sweeley.

Nylah Ford scored with 23 minutes, 32 seconds to play in the game for Williamsport, which tied it at 1-1, but Danville’s Madison Merrell scored the go-ahead winner with 7:42 left to give the Ironmen a 2-1 win.

Sarah Spring recorded five saves in goal as Williamsport was limited to just two shots.

Wellsboro’s Carys Barlett scored to give the Green Hornets an early lead, but Wellsboro fell to Northeast Bradford, 4-1. Kayleigh Thoman had a had trick for Northeast Bradford.

Central Mountain came up shy against Altoona on the road, 5-1. Central Mountain battled Altoona strong in the first 20 minutes before Altoona was able to put a goal in.

Halle Lodek scored for the Wildcats on a header from Julia Smith for Central Mountain’s lone goal.

Grace Pysher, Alli Anstadt and Sophia Clark all scored to help Hughesville defeat Mifflinburg, 3-1. Mifflinburg tied the game midway through the first half, but two goals in a four-minute span in the second half lifted the Spartans to the win.

Lewisburg scored five first-half goals en route to an 8-0 rout over Shamokin to earn the Green Dragons first win of 2022. Sophie Kilbride had two goals and two assists and Kate Batkowski recorded two goals for the Green Dragons.

• Central Mountain’s golf team beat Shikellamy, 163-210. Peyton Newlen led the Wildcats with a 40 while Gardy Fravel, Griffin Walizer and Evan Walker each shot 41s.

Hannah Rabb shot par (36) at Danville to lead Warrior Run to a narrow 186-187 win against Danville. Mason Sheesley shot a 49 for the Defenders, Hunter Saul shot a 50 and Dylan Laubach shot a 51.

• Freshman goalkeeper Isabella Bobe notched nine saves to lead the Lycoming College field hockey team, which fell to Juniata College, 5-0.

The Warriors (1-4 overall) fired six shots in the game, with three coming from first-year Juliana McGovern and the team also had four penalty corners.

Sydney Witter led the Eagles (1-4 overall) with two goals and two assists and Miranda Madara added two goals and an assist. Aimee Buffington also scored.

Junior Alex Esterling scored a goal at the end of each half to lead Mansfield to overtime against second-ranked Shippensburg, but the Raiders scored in the extra period to steal an exciting midweek game, 4-3.

• The Mansfield University women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the nation's fifth-ranked team in West Chester. The Mounties fall to 1-4-1 overall and 0-4-1 in conference, while the Golden Rams improve to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the East.

The Mounties' defense was lights out in the first half, fighting off 19 West Chester shot attempts, while only allowing one score.

Lycoming fired 18 shots, but a great defensive effort helped Marymount University become the first team to draw with Lycoming in 2022, 0-0.

The Saints recorded eight saves on Lycoming's 18 shots, while sophomore Abbey Gerasimoffstopped two shots in her second complete shutout of the season and the team's school-record fifth straight shutout, extending the team's scoreless minutes streak to a record 504.

• Three goals in the second half helped lift the Lycoming College men's soccer team to a 3-3 draw with Lancaster Bible College.

After being held scoreless and down two goals by the 56th minute, senior Brayden Wise collected the ball 30 yards out and took the ball into the goalbox himself, firing a shot past the Lancaster Bible goalkeeper.

The Chargers (2-1-1 overall) took the two-goal lead back again less than a minute later, but the Warriors (2-1-3 overall) responded in the final 30 minutes. Sophomore Joe Bamfo fired a shot off the goalline just inside the right post, headed to him by sophomore Jaeden Asare, who was posted on the left side of the box to make it a one-goal game.

Jordan Miller scored an equalizing goal for Bucknell in the 12th minute, but Saint Francis answered with a goal before the halftime interval followed by two more in the second half for a 4-1 win. Nico Stoddart scored twice for Saint Francis.

Lock Haven and Bloomsburg played to a 90-minute 0-0 draw in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division action.

The Bald Eagles started quick and looked poise to make a breakthrough in the fourth minute when Davis Dull broke past the goalkeeper, but a fantastic goal line clearance kept the game level at 0-0.

• In their home opener, the Lycoming College men's tennis team fell to Susquehanna University, 9-0.

The Warriors fall to 0-1 in their opening team match against the River Hawks after a weekend where three Warriors reached the quarterfinals at the MAC Individual Championships. Susquehanna advanced to 2-0.

• Paced by Montoursville graduate Peyton Mussina’s individual tie for 10th, the Penn College men’s golf team finished eighth in the Elizabethtown College Fall Invitational.

Mussina, a sophomore transfer student, recorded a 6-over-par 77 on the par 71, 7,061-yard Hershey Country Club East course.
