Lock Haven came up just shy of defeating Bloomsburg last week and will try to ride some of that momentum of a close, exciting contest into this afternoon’s matchup.
The Bald Eagles (1-6) travel to Kutztown for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
Lock Haven trailed just 10-9 last week after Justin White caught a 19-yard touchdown from Samuel Barber with 5:24 left to play in the third quarter before Bloomsburg responded on the ensuing drive for a touchdown to go ahead by eight.
After a lopsided loss the week before, 72-7, last Saturday’s contest showed a lot of promising signs for the Bald Eagles.
Barber saw time at quarterback, going 13 for 16 for 111 yards and a touchdown. Easton Turner also played, going 10 for 14 for 91. On the ground, DeAndre Wakefield ran for 60 yards on 16 carries. Quentin Gaskill recorded an interception for the Bald Eagles, Adam Burkhart had a pass breakup, and Kenny Yurkonis (1.0), William Martin III (1.0), Jamir Redd (1.0), Dan Daly (0.5) and Hakeem Bacon (0.5) all recorded sacks. Gaskill also led the Bald Eagles’ defense with seven solo tackles.
Kutztown (5-2) has won three in a row with victories over East Stroudsburg (24-20), Bloomsburg (24-0) and Shippensburg (29-10). The Golden Bears have had a lot of success offensively this year.
On the ground, Darryl Davis-McNeil is proving to be a tough threat to neutralize as he has 725 rushing yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 5.0 yards per carry. In addition, Jordan Davvis has rushed for 362 and two scores, averaging 3.7 giving Kutztown two very solid backs.
At quarterback, Donny Blaine has thrown for 1,209 yards in seven games, going 89 of 145 with 10 touchdown strikes. Kutztown has a trio of receivers with at least 100 receiving yards in Jerome Kapp (26 for 530, 6 TDs), Kurtis Ravenel Jr. (11 for 144) and Jake Novak (10 for 139).
Lock Haven’s offense will have to be careful with limiting turnovers as Kutztown’s defense has recorded seven interceptions and has four fumble recoveries.
The Bald Eagles have three games remaining on the schedule following today's contest at Kutztown. On Oct. 29, Lock haven heads to West Chester for a noon kickoff, followed by senior day on Nov. 5 hosting Shippensburg for a 1 p.m. game.
