Less than a minute after a Juniata College shot hit the crossbar, sophomore Madison Maihle, a Jersey Shore graduate, sent a cross from the left side into the box where senior Kylie Magaro connected with it to get it bounce into the goal to help lift the Lycoming College women's soccer team to its record setting 12th win of the year, downing Juniata, 2-1.
The all-time single-season wins record was set by the 2004 team that went 12-4-1. This year's Warriors advanced to 12-4-2 with one game remaining in the regular season, as the squad has earned its first regional rankings from the United Soccer Coaches and NCAA this week, as the team is also set to make its first postseason appearance in the program's 29-year history next week.
Freshman Natalie Bates struck first with a goal that opened the scoring in the 37th minute for her first career goal. Bates, positioned in the left corner of the goal box, was there to clean it up after senior Bella Green, a South Williamsport graduate, fired near the box before freshman Rhandie Jessell, a Loyalsock graduate, delivered a pass to Bates in the corner.
Freshman defender Meghan White's first collegiate goal tied the game in the final minute of the first half, and the Bucknell women's soccer team finished in a 1-1 draw with Lehigh in the regular-season finale.
Bucknell concluded the regular season with an 8-5-4 overall record and a 5-1-3 record in the Patriot League. The Bison went unbeaten in their final eight Patriot League games after dropping their first conference match of the season at Navy back on Sept. 16.
Army scored in the 90th minute to beat Boston University 3-2 and claim the outright regular-season title with 20 points. Bucknell and Boston University tied for second on 18 points, and the Bison get the tiebreaker based on their 1-0 win in Boston on Oct. 15. The Terriers slide to the No. 3 seed, and Lehigh gets the No. 4 seed with 17 points. Navy moved up to the No. 5 spot after beating Lafayette on Wednesday, jumping No. 6 Loyola, which lost its finale to American.
Lock Haven came up shy against Kutztown, 3-1. The Bald Eagles also dedicated tonight's game as a "Pink Out" to support breast cancer awareness and research.
Kutztown broke the deadlock from the penalty spot after the Golden Bears converted the spot kick in the 25th minute. Kutztown held onto the 1-0 lead heading into halftime to set up an entertaining second half.
• With one game remaining in the regular season, the Lycoming College men's soccer team is listed fifth in the second NCAA Region IV rankings.
The Warriors shutout DeSales University, 2-0, on Oct. 23, to clinch a spot in the MAC Freedom Championship before posting a 1-1 draw with Region V's seventh-ranked Gettysburg College on Oct. 25.
Stevens tops the Region IV poll, while the New Jersey Athletic Conference's Montclair State and University Athletic Association's NYU take the next two slots. Misericordia, Lycoming, the NJAC's Rowan and the United East's Lancaster Bible round out the ranking.
With a 9-4-5 overall record and a 5-2 mark in the MAC Freedom, the Warriors have averaged 1.72 goals per game while allowing 1.11. The Warriors lead the MAC Freedom with 7.06 corner kicks per game and are third in the league with an 11-plus goal differential.
Lock Haven rolled past Shepherd, 3-0, as the Bald Eagles closed out the 2022 regular season in style in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division contest.
Prior to kickoff, the Bald Eagles honored its group of four seniors: Aitor Ruiz de Eguilaz, Connor Burke, Caleb Olive and Justin Douglas.
• Sophomore Kenedy Stroup netted her seventh goal of the season to even the score for the Mansfield University field hockey team in the first half, but Bloomsburg University scored the lone goal in the second half to steal a 2-1 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference victory.
The Mounties (7-8, 1-5 PSAC) fall two games behind Bloomsburg (8-6, 3-3 PSAC) for seventh in the conference, one slot out of earning a postseason berth.
The Huskies scored the game's first goal just 43 seconds into the contest to take an early 1-0 lead. However, Stroup found the back of the cage in the 21st minute to knot the game at one. Stroup has surpassed her goal total from her rookie season by three, with three games to go.
