Milton opened the District 4 Class AA tournament with a convincing 4-0 win over Williamson in girls soccer on Monday night. With the win, the Black Panthers advance to face Montoursville on Wednesday night at Loyalsock in the semifinals.
The Warriors and Black Panthers met up in last year’s district tournament as well.
Mackenzie Lopez scored twice for Milton and Cam Roush and Sammy Roarty both added goals. Milton out-shot Williamson, 43-7, and Roush, Maddie Zeiber and Makayla Loreman all had assists.
Another first-round game in Class AA was competed as Warrior Run edged Midd-West, 1-0, to advance to the District 4 quarterfinals. The Defenders will face top-seeded and undefeated Central Columbia.
Maura Woland scored Warrior Run’s only goal in the win, scoring in the first half. Addy Ohnmeiss recorded the shutout in goal, registering five saves.
• Wellsboro defeated Wyalusing, 3-0, in girls volleyball (25-11, 26-24, 25-13). Emily Starkweather led Wellsboro with six kills. Maddi Bordas had a team-high 11 assists and Natalie Cleveland led the team with 12 digs while Starkweather had 11.
• With a pair of interceptions to help the Lycoming College football team to a 42-10 win over Alvernia University, senior Austin Rowley has earned his first career Middle Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week award.
Rowley picked off two passes and made four tackles in the 42-10 win over the Golden Wolves. Rowley's first interception, a diving one, set up Lycoming’s third touchdown. The senior's second interception was returned 40 yards to the Alvernia 31 to set up Lycoming’s fourth touchdown.
Rowley is tied for the conference lead in interceptions with four on the season. He is second on the team with 49 tackles. The four-year starter has nine interceptions and 157 tackles in his career.
Rowley is the team's second MAC Defensive Player of the Week this season, joining sophomore linebacker Joey Rivituso, who was honored after posting two fumble recoveries and an interception against Albright on Sept. 26.
• A pair of shutouts to set the Lycoming College women's soccer team's single-season shutout record has helped sophomore goalkeeper Abbey Gerasimoff earn her first MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week award.
In a 1-0 shutoutof King's College on Oct. 18, Gerasimoff recorded three saves on the game before making seven in a 1-0 clean sheet of DeSales University on Oct. 22, helping the Lycoming College women's soccer team earn its first trip to the MAC Freedom Championship in the program's 29-year history.
The wins gave Gerasimoff her sixth and seventh solo shutouts, surpassing Jessica Bennett's record of six set in 2004. The Warriors, meanwhile, have a program-best 11 shutouts this year. Gerasimoff's seven shutouts are second in the conference, just one behind FDU-Florham's Erica Blackburn.
Bucknell freshman defender Meghan White has earned her second straight Patriot League Rookie of the Week citation after playing all 90 minutes in a Saturday's scoreless draw with Army at Emmitt Field.
The Bison and Black Knights entered the game tied for first place in the Patriot League and engaged in a defensive struggle. White, who has started all 16 games at left back this season, was part of a back four that helped keep Army off the scoreboard for only the third time all season.
The shutout was Bucknell's ninth of the season, and the Bison rank second in the league in goals-against average at 0.81.
Penn College junior Kaelynn Sheetz was named United East Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of Week honors.
Sheetz had a historic outing as her offensive performance led to her third Athlete of the Week accolade as well as win in the Wildcats sole contest. The junior tallied four goals in the shutout over Penn State Abington on Saturday, including a first half hat trick. Her four tallies increased her season total to 16, which broke the Penn College single-season record and put her on top of the leader board in the conference.
• Two Bucknell men's soccer freshmen were honored by the Patriot League on Monday, as Charlie Holmes was selected as the Rookie of the Week and Freddie Lapworth as the Goalkeeper of the Week.
The Bison turned in two strong performances last week, a hard-fought 2-1 loss at fourth-ranked Syracuse followed by a 1-1 draw with Colgate, which was then the third-place team in the Patriot League.
The Bison were level with the red-hot Orange into the second half, with Holmes and Lapworth playing starring roles. Holmes's first career goal was one for the highlight reel, and it evened the match 12 minutes in after Syracuse had scored just four minutes earlier. Holmes had a great first touch to settle a pass from Eddie Perez-Pelaez, then he deked his defender to create space for a curling shot off the right post and in. The goal came against a Syracuse side that was ranked fifth nationally in team goals-against average at just 0.50 per game.
• For the second time in three weeks, Lock Haven’s Brynlee Pinschenat took home Rookie of the Week honors from the Atlantic 10 Conference after her game-winner against VCU in women’s field hockey.
Early in the fourth quarter of a 1-1 tense road battle against VCU, the Bald Eagles freshman standout grabbed her third goal of the season to hand Lock Haven an important A-10 victory over the Rams. Pinschenat notched the game-winner off an assist from Amy Stevens and has now totaled seven points on three goals and one assist in her rookie campaign.
Pinschenat and the Bald Eagles are back in action on Friday (Oct. 28) when The Haven travels to UMass. That contest closes out the A-10 schedule for the Bald Eagles and is set for a 3 p.m. start. Lock Haven has all but assured their spot in the conference playoffs, but Friday’s contest still holds significant seeding implications for both sides.
