Numerous area runners saw success at the NEPA Invitational cross country race at Bloomsburg University. On the boys side, Milton’s Ryan Bickhart had a second-place finish in 16:44.60, behind only Danville’s Dane Spahr, who ran a 16:31.80.
Montoursville’s Weston Fry took seventh in 17:07.30, Milton’s Rex Farr was an 11th-place finisher in 17:15.70 and Jersey Shore’s Raidan Francis took 12th in 17:21.20. Hughesville’s Tyce Shaner was a 15th-place finisher as a freshman in 17:28.20 to round out the top 15 finishers.
Hughesville took second in the team scores with 128 points, behind only Danville. Milton finished eighth, Central Mountain finished 13th and Warrior Run took 15th.
Lewisburg freshman Baylee Espinosa was a fifth-place finisher on the girls side, the highest area finisher, with a time of 19:04.40. Lewisburg’s Alanna Jacob finished ninth in 19:45.80 and Central Mountain’s Abbey Wolfe took tenth in 19:58.60.
Warrior Run’s Sage Dunkleberger was the only other area runner to finish in the top 15.
In the team results, Lewisburg finished third, Warrior Run took fifth, and Hughesville, Central Mountain and Milton finished seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively.
• Lewisburg blanked Crestwood, 4-0, as Alfred Romano recorded a hat trick and Darrien Svilokos had a goal and assist.
Viktor Permyashkin had two assists for the Green Dragons, who are now 9-0-1.
Milton defeated South Williamsport, 3-1. The Black Panthers took a 3-0 lead thanks to goals by Dom Ballo, Evan Yoder and Seth Yoder. Ian Rieppel scored on a free kick for the Mounties to avoid the shutout.
Muncy received two goals apiece from James Walters and Konnor Shearer as the Indians defeated Line Mountain, 4-2. Rhoan Stark, Logan Ohl, Shearer and Bode Hart had assists.
Muncy moved to 3-4-2.
Nick Bellomo and Carter Stackhouse each had a goal and assist as Jersey Shore defeated Shikellamy, 3-2.
• Emilie Nagel scored twice and had an assist as Muncy defeated Sullivan County, 3-1. Addi Eyer scored the game’s first goal and Mia Edkin had an assist.
Sullivan’s goal came from Stella Harney off an assist by Lilly McCarty.
Mackenzie Lopez scored twice, once per half, as Milton blanked Central Mountain, 2-0. The Black Panthers out-shot the Wildcats, 19-6. Kiahna Jones recorded 11 saves for Central Mountain.
Montoursville’s Lydia Earnest put in two goals to help Montoursville defeat State College, 3-0. Bryn Jacopetti scored on a penalty kick and Natalie Bennett had an assist.
Defensively, Montoursville’s back line played well and limited State College to just two shots on goal through 80 minutes of play.
Lewisburg defeated Hughesville, 1-0. Sophie Kilbride scored the game’s only goal in the 49th minute. Both teams fired numerous shots as Lewisburg held a 16-13 edge.
• Williamsport's golf team won the Class AAA team championship in district competition on Thursday as Ally Chilson, Abby Mahon and Maria Montoya helped lead the Millionaires. Williamsport won with a team score of 334. Chilson shot a 102 over 18 holes played, Montoya shot a 109 and Mahon shot a 123.
• Loyalsock blanked Mifflinburg, 5-0. Anna Hall, Maddy Hall and Izzy Dadzie all won via straight sets at Nos. 1-3 singles, respectively, 6-0, 6-0.
Loyalsock won both doubles matches by forfeit.
Jersey Shore moved to 15-1 with a 5-0 win against Milton. Peyton Dincher beat Brooklyn Wade at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Celia Shemory won at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Breanna Porter and Addison Koch won for the Bulldogs at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, 6-2.
• In girls volleyball, Williamsport defeated Lake Lehman, 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-24). It’s the second straight win for the Millionaires after beating Williamson the day prior, 3-1 (25-17, 15-25, 25-19, 25-16).
Elise Berthold had 10 points, nine kills and 12 digs for the Millionaires and Aubrey Glosser had 16 points, four kills, four blocks and four digs. Belle Morrow had 14 points, Haylee Bennett had 14 points and Jayden Ulmer had 10 solo blocks and two assisted. Neveah Hale had six digs and Lili Cox added 10 digs.
• Three goals in less than 10 minutes in the second half helped the Lycoming College men's soccer team to a 5-0 homecoming shutout of Delaware Valley .
Five Warriors (5-2-4 overall. 1-0 MAC Freedom) found the back of the net with sophomore Owen Magee opening the scoring for the Warriors just three minutes in on a shot from inside the left goal post off a pass from junior Joe Bamfo.
At 34:30 in the first, sophomore Jahci Knick put the Warriors up by two, catching the ball at the top of the box from senior Brayden Wise.
Penn College fell to St. Mary’s (Maryland) on the road, 5-1. After St. Mary’s scored in the 25th minute, Penn College responded with a goal six minutes later when Nathan Schwartz assisted Matt Neeson to tie it up.
St. Mary’s, however, would score four goals in the final 17 minutes to secure the win.
Lock Haven fell to East Stroudsburg, 2-1. The Bald Eagles entered the match on a four-match unbeaten streak (2-0-2), but ESU stopped the streak.
The Bald Eagles’ hard work paid off and they took the lead late in the first half thanks to a perfect shot from Austin Kravetz who calmly drilled the ball home from 16 yards out after a short crossing-pass from Connor Swope in the 40th minute.
Marcos Kitromilides converted a penalty kick in the 33rd minute, and Bucknell could not find an equalizer despite a dominant second half and a ball off the post late in the game as Lafayette held on for a 1-0 win in a Patriot League match.
Bucknell outshot Lafayette, 18-9, including a 14-3 edge in the second half, in one of its best performances of the season.
• Helping each other out to the tune of a goal and an assist each, seniors Bella Green (a South Williamsport graduate) and Bridgett Maaloum led the Lycoming College women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout of Delaware Valley University to open MAC Freedom competition.
Maaloum opened the scoring for the Warriors (7-2-2 overall, 1-0 MAC Freedom) in the 26th minute from the top right corner of the box after a through pass from Green at center field.
Green's goal in the 81st minute was a header directly in front of the goal off a pass from Maaloum from just inside the box.
Penn College defeated St. Mary’s, 3-2. The Wildcats led 3-0 within the first 24 minutes of the game. Kaelynn Sheetz had two goals and Wiley Egan had a goal and assist.
Brooke Klinger and Sara Darlington also added assists for Penn College, which improved to 4-6-1.
Not long after Holy Cross scored an equalizing goal 15 minutes into the second half, Bucknell exploded for four goals in a span of 10 minutes in a 5-1 victory over Holy Cross in Patriot League action. Abby Gearhart scored the go-ahead goal from long range in the 66th minute, her first of two goals on the day, to help the Bison get to 3-1 in league play and 6-5-1 overall.
Gearhart added an assist to go along with the two goals, and freshman Henna Andican was also involved in three goals, scoring once and assisting on two others. Teresa Deda and Hanna Stuck added goals in that second-half flurry as Bucknell defeated Holy Cross for the eighth straight time at Emmitt Field.
• In women’s volleyball, Penn College lost to Arcadia, 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-15) and Widener, 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-8). The pair of losses drop the Wildcats to 2-8.
Against Arcadia, Cheyenne Stein had a team-high nine assists and Maggie Mangene had a team-high two aces and nine digs. Stein also had eight digs and Christine Limbert had five kills.
In the loss to Widener, Coryn Oswald had five kills and a team-high 14 digs, and Stein had a team-high 13 assists.
Junior Brynne Bisel had 17 kills and 30 digs to lead Lycoming, which posted a 3-0 win over Pitt-Greensburg (25-20, 25-21, 25-21) to split a pair of matches at La Roche College, falling to La Roche, 3-1 (18-25, 15-25, 26-24, 12-25).
Bisel led the Warriors (11-6 overall) with 11 kills, an ace and 11 digs for a double-double to lead the team to the win over Pitt-Greensburg (0-9 overall). Senior Elizabeth Kelson posted nine kills and a block and freshman Cameron Upcraft added eight kills and a block in the win.
Lock Haven fell to visiting East Stroudsburg, 3-0, (25-17, 25-10 & 25-22) in PSAC Eastern Division action.
The Warriors started strong in the opening set and pulled away late for the 25-17 win. East Stroudsburg used the momentum to pull away for a 25-10 win in the second set, and closed out the action in a tight 25-22 final set.
Gabriela Fialova put up a solid night offensively and notched a game-high 12 kills on a .241 hitting percentage. The senior outside-hitter also added seven digs defensively.
• The Lycoming College field hockey team fell to FDU-Florham, 4-0.
Freshman Kelly Preston recorded a defensive save and sophomore Halie Woodring had a shot for the Warriors (2-7 overall, 0-3 MAC Freedom).
The Devils (7-3 overall, 3-0 MAC Freedom) were led by three goals and an assist from Haleigh Flukey.
Freshman goalkeeper Isabella Bobe made 11 saves. FDU-Florham goalkeeper Emily Prachthouser earned the shutout.
Mansfield dropped their PSAC opener to Indiana (Pa.), 1-0. IUP's Blaise Cugini scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Jess Davidson during the opening minute of the second quarter. Amanda Zaner earned the victory in net for the Crimson Hawks, finishing with a game-high five saves.
The Mounties led 8-5 on corners, and 9-7 on shots, but couldn't find the back of the cage to force overtime.
Lock Haven soared to a 3-1 win over Davidson in Atlantic 10 action.
The Bald Eagles got things rolling just five minutes in when Ellie Mead knocked home a goal off an assist from Amy Stevens on a well-worked corner routine to hand Lock Haven the 1-0 lead.
Martina Spangenberg kept the party going in the second quarter when she converted a breakaway to double the Bald Eagle advantage.
