Penn College's men's basketball team scored an 83-65 win over Elmira College on Tuesday in the non-conference season opener for both teams.
After nearly two minutes of scoreless opening play, Rees Watkins put Penn College on the board with a layup. After three ties -- the last at 7-all -- the Wildcats went on a 13-0 run, with Gavin Barrett connecting on three 3-point shots, and eventually built a 20-point lead before closing out the half in front by 18, 47-29. During the first half, Barrett scored 12 points, Obens Luxama had 11 and Watkins 8. Penn College continued to pull away in the second half, building its largest lead of 27 points at 76-49 with 4:19 to play.
Luxama finished with a team-high 19 points for the Wildcats, while Barrett added 14 points and Watkins 13 points. Will Sulesky topped Penn College with 10 rebounds. Elmira's Bryan Adams led all scorers with 22 points. The Wildcats shot 45% from the field (29 of 64) and made 47% of its 3-point shots (9 of 19).
• Penn College surrendered a 40-38 fourth quarter lead, as Elmira outscored the Wildcats, 22-7, in the final period, en route a 57-45 win in a non-conference women's basketball game.
Deadlocked at 7-7 early in the first quarter, the Wildcats used an 8-0 run to take a 15-7 lead on a Rachel Teats three with 3:25 left in the first quarter. Elmira ended the quarter with a 5-0 run to cut into PCT's lead, 15-12. The second quarter saw the game tied twice, and the lead change four times, before the Wildcats took a 27-25 lead at halftime.
Kayleigh Miller's three, with 6:48 left in the third gave Penn College its largest lead of the second half, 33-27. The Eagles countered with a 6-0 spurt to even the game at 33, but Ja'Quela hit two free throws, and Teats a three to help PCT maintain a 38-35 lead at the end of the third. The Eagles outscored the Wildcats 22-7 in the fourth to secure the win.
Teats scored a team-high 17 points for Penn College and Dyer finished with a double-double, with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Desiree Ros led all scorers with 19 points for Elmira, while Olivia Ayres added 17.
