Williamsport opened and closed strong Friday at the William Penn York Tournament as three players reached double digits in a 59-46 semifinal win against Woodland Hills. The Millionaires (1-1) built a 17-9 first quarter lead and closed on an 18-12 run. George Whaley matched a career-high with 23 points and Caden Holt added 11. Those two combined for six 3-pointers and Jamaire Harden scored 10 points.
Quinn Ranck scored a career-high 20 points and drained four 3-pointers as Montoursville won a hard-fought game at Jersey Shore, 61-55. Freshman Shea Ulmer made a big impact off the bench, scoring 14 points, including five in the fourth quarter, and Bryce Eberhart added 10. Spencer Brion scored a career-high 22 points for Jersey Shore in its first game and matched Ranck with four 3-pointers. Mason Miller also reached double figures with 12 points and Ben Dalton added nine.
Branson Eyer scored 23 points and was 10 of 12 from the field with five assists as Muncy defeated MMI Prep in the Mountain Madness Tournament semifinals at Sullivan County. Michael Fry scored 19 thanks to hitting five 3-pointers and Ross Eyer produced his 28th straight double-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Noah Confer added six assists for Muncy (2-0) and Ryan Sones had 28 points for MMI Prep.
Muncy will play host Sullivan County after the Griffins erased a 10-point fourth quarter deficit and dramatically defeated Troy, 44-42. Ben Carpenter came off a ball screen, went to the rim and finished with less than a second to play to give the Griffins the win over last year’s District 4 Class AAA runner-up. Carpenter led Sullivan County with 18 points, while Maddox Bahr scored 10 and Landon Baldwin added eight. Sullivan (1-0) allowed just three points during the fourth quarter comeback.
Rayne Parrish scored a career-high 22 points and connected on six 3-pointers, but Northeast Bradford edged Montgomery, 58-54 in an exciting Kyle Lynn Memorial Tournament semifinal. Hayden Wilt scored 12 points and Noah Gearhart made four steals. Demaj Stewart-Williams added five rebounds. Josh Stanton scored 18 points for NEB which will play two-time defending champion North Penn-Liberty in the final.
Brody Burleigh grabbed his 500th career rebound in a wild North Penn-Mansfield 49-41 win against previously undefeated Northwest. The Tigers (3-1) led 26-12 at halftime after blanking Northwest in the second quarter. The Rangers (4-1) then outscored NP-Mansfield 25-5 in the third quarter before the Tigers erased a six-point fourth quarter deficit to win. Burleigh finished with 11 points and Karson Dominick scored a game-high 19. Cooper Shaw added nine points.
In girls’ basketball, Muncy defeated Wellsboro, 48-35, at the Muncy Rotary Tournament. Wellsboro plays in the consolation game on Saturday at 6 p.m. and Muncy plays in the final at 7:30 p.m. Avery Bigelow had a monster game for the Indians (2-0), scoring a career-high 25 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Mia Edkin added 14 points with four steals and Addi Eyer dealt 10 assists. Wellsboro was led by Chloe Brandenburg’s 16 points.
Central Mountain defeated Bald Eagle Area, 55-44. The Wildcats held a 20-14 lead at the half. Senior Kiahna Jones had a career-high 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double. Nine Wildcats scored in the game.
Lewisburg defeated Penns Valley, 37-29. Elsa Fellon and Sophie Kilbride each scored eight points and Keeley Baker had a team-high nine points. Kilbride had nine rebounds and seven steals and assisted two assists. Still had five steals, six boards and an assist. Baker had a near double-double as she had 11 rebounds.
North Penn-Mansfield fell against Wellsville, N.Y., 57-28. McKenna Lightener had 10 points, four rebounds, two blocks and a steal and Kameron Lightener and Addison Farrer each had seven points and four rebounds. Farrer added five steals.
In high school wrestling, Lewisburg fell to Shikellamy, 48-24. Derek Shedleski won by major decision at 172 pounds against Matthew Shaffer. Lewisburgás Landen Wagner picked up a 4-2 decision win at 126 and at 132, Quintong Bartlett won for Lewisburg via tech fall, 16-0, 5:22, against Shikellamy’s Daniel Hernandez.
Senior Katherine Brown won three individual events and helped the 200-yard medley relay team to a win as well to lead the Lycoming College swimming teams in a dual meet at Penn State-Altoona. Penn State-Altoona edged the Lycoming women, 119-97, and won the men’s meet, 154-71.
Brown was a part of four of the Warrior women’s six event wins, as Penn State-Altoona won six events and added 55 points in second to fifth-place points and the Warriors had 41.
Brown posted a 31.33 to win the 50-yard breaststroke, a 25.75 to win the 50-yard freestyle and a 1:07.62 to win the 100-yard breaststroke and she teamed with freshman Augustus Wood, junior Elisa DiNicola (a Loyalsock graduate) and junior Cathryn Brought (a Wellsboro graduate) to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:56.34.
DiNicola also won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.89 and Brought won the 100-yard freestyle in 57.35 and finished second in the 50-yard breaststroke in 33.13.
