Montgomery, Muncy wrestlers see success at 2023 Mid-Winter Mayhem tournament
Montgomery and Muncy each had two finalists at the 2023 Mid-Winter Mayhem wrestling tournament on Saturday evening.
Muncy’s Austin Johnson was a first-place finisher at 215 pounds after he defeated Fort LeBoeuf’s Danny Church by decision, 9-5, and brother Scott Johnson took first with a major decision victory at 133 over Fort LeBoeuf’s JoJo Przybycien, 11-1.
The Red Raiders’ Brandt Harer defeated Mid Valley’s Matthew Almedina at 121 with a major decision, 10-1. His brother Conner Harer took second at 152, falling via decision to West Allegheny’s Ty Watters in a tough contest, 3-2.
Brandt Harer advanced to the finals after he defeated West Allegheny’s Cooper Smith via major decision, 13-3. Scott Johnson beat Hughesville standout Caiden Puderbach, a 100-win wrestler, by major decision, 17-7, in a match of two outstanding District 4 wrestlers. Conner Harer defeated Forest Hills’ Dustin Flinn in the semifinals by tech fall, 18-3, 4:21. Austin Johnson beat Penn Trafford’s Owen Ott via major decision, 14-5.
Muncy’s Gage Swank took third at 107 with a 1-0 decision against Benton’s Seth Kolb. Montgomery’s Caden Finck was a fourth-place finisher after falling in the third-place bout at 172 to St. Mary’s Waylon Wehler by decision, 3-1.
Puderbach was a fifth-place finsher. Puderbach battled Benton’s Dylan Granaham in a tough match at 133, escaping with a 4-3 win. Another area fifth-place finisher was Canton’s Michael Davis, who defeated Penn Cambria’s Raymond Cresson via decision, 5-0, at 215.
In the seventh-place finals, Canton’s Hayden Ward (139) and Hughesville’s Chase Shaner (114) were winners, and Montgomery’s Manny Stoltzfus (107) took eighth.
Ward defeated Cranberry’s Dane Wenner by decision at 139, 4-3, and Shaner had a fall over West Allegheny’s Caiden Harbart in 2:44. Stoltzfus was pinned by Hickory’s Brody Bishop in 4:11.
