Central Mountain wrestling wins at state tournament; Warrior Run and Canton fall into consolations

Central Mountain advanced in the winners’ bracket of the PIAA Class AAA team tournament on Thursday afternoon to Friday’s quarterfinals. In Class AA, both Warrior Run and Canton lost to fall into the consolation bracket.

The Defenders, who won the program’s first ever District 4 team title last weekend, fell to Fort LeBoeuf, 33-24. Canton, the District 4 runner-up, lost to Berks Catholic, 38-15.

Canton will face District 7 runner-up Burrell and Warrior Run faces District 3 runner-up West Perry in the first round of the consolation bracket.

Central Mountain, the District 6 champions, face District 7 third-place finisher Hempfield Area today.

The Wildcats used a string of wins late to secure the win. Luke Simcox (133 pounds), Dalton Perry (139) and Griffin Walizer (145) had consecutive fall victories before Braylen Corter beat Ethan Whittaker via decision, 6-2, at 152.

Leading just 33-29 entering the final bout, Central Mountain’s Jacob Weaver did a solid job battling and not letting Dayne Miller get points for a major decision victory or a pin. It resulted in Weaver winning by decision, 9-6, for three huge points.

Reagan and Kaden Milheim each saw success in their bouts for Warrior Run. At 139 pounds, Reagan Milheim pinned Blake Glass in the second period in 3 minutes, 59 seconds. A bout later, it was Kaden Milheim with a second-period pin over Jackson Bowers in 2:37. Cameron Milheim won via forfeit at 160.

Trey Nicholas won for Warrior Run at 114 by beating Fort LeBoeuf’s Nikolay Bardwell by decision, 5-0. Tyler Ulrich won by decision at 127, 9-6, against Noah Cuic. The Defenders’ Samuel Hal ost by decision to Jojo Przybycien, 8-1.

Berks Catholic won each bout from 107 through 139, with three decision victories, two major decisions and a fall. Brayden Hartranft pinned Canton’s Joe Luner in just 26 seconds at 114.

Canton’s Hayden Ward earned a first-period fall over John Mauer in 1:15 at 145. A bout later at 152, it was Canton’s Hudson Ward who beat Ricardo Tinoco by decision, 9-3.

Canton’s Riley Parker and Michael Davis won consecutive bouts at 189 and 215, respectively. Parker beat Timothy Saylor by decision in a tough match, 6-5, and Davis beat Brody Kline by decision, 8-2.
