Local roundup: Loyalsock boys beat Southern to win seventh straight league title

Earlier this season it appeared unlikely, but Loyalsock heated up at the right time and captured the HAC-III championship Friday night, doing so in impressive fashion in boys basketball.

Gage Patterson scored 22 points and Ethan Nagy produced a double-double as Loyalsock went on the road and defeated Southern Columbia, 73-58 to win its seventh straight league title. Both teams entered with 7-2 league records and with this game being the last for each in league play, it doubled as a HAC-III championship. Southern led 21-17 after the first quarter but Loyalsock went up by five by halftime and extended the lead throughout the second half. Nagy scored a career-high 15 points and added 12 rebounds while Jaylen Andrews scored 18 points. Loyalsock (12-6, 8-2) will play Williamsport Saturday night at Lycoming College.

Lewisburg also celebrated a championship Friday night, winning a share of the HAC-II crown by defeating Montoursville, 75-57. The Dragons split the championship with Danville and both finished 9-1 in league play. Cam Michaels erupted for a career-high 33 points and Henry Harrison added 20. Those two and Devin Bodden (9 points) combined to make 14 3-pointers. Lewisburg, Danville, Loyalsock and HAC-I champion Central Mountain will compete in the Heartland Conference Tournament nearly two weeks from now. Quinn Ranck scored 17 points for Montoursville and Tanner Menne had 15 points with eight rebounds.

Jersey Shore built a two-point halftime lead but Shikellamy rallied in the second half and won, 63-51. Mason Miller and Derrick High each had eight points as part of a balanced Bulldog offense.

Montgomery limited Bucktail’s offense to 26 points through the first three quarters en route to a 61-43 win. Noah Gearhart led the Red Raiders with 14 points while Rayne Parrish added 13.

Montgomery also received 10 from Parker Bennett. Bucktail was led by Brody Pentz’s impressive 23 points and Gary Whipp’s nine.

Galeton played tough, but fell to Port Allegany at home, 49-37. John Martin led Galeton with 15 points while Brady Cimino scored eight.

Warrior Run took a big step toward securing a playoff berth, playing strong defense and defeating Bloomsburg, 51-37. The Defenders (10-9) won their third straight game as Carter Marr scored 11 points, made six steals and added five assists. Ryan Newton and Cooper Wilkins each had 10 points with Newton adding five rebounds. Aiden McKee grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked four shots.

• Haley Litzelman scored 13 points to led North Penn-Liberty in a 43-26 win against Sayre in a Northern Tier contest. Sidney Landis added nine and Jaclyn Nelson scored seven.

Wellsboro defeated Williamson, 58-39, thanks to Chloe Brandenburg’s 25-point effort. Paige Logsdon scored 13 points and Maddy Mascho added 12. Taylor Rae Jones scored 15 points and Olivia Meisner added 11 for Williamson.

Williamson’s Gracie Stephens contributed nine.

• Rhode Island’s Lily Saul, a Montoursville graduate, anchored the 3,200 relay team as they took first place with a time of 9:11.24 at a New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association meet in college track and field.

Saul also was a third-place finisher in the 500 with a time of 1:15.12.
