Williamsport has 10 wrestlers qualify for regionals

JERSEY SHORE — Toward the end of Saturday’s District 4-9 Class AAA tournament, it seemed Williamsport coach Brian Nasdeo was making a trip every other bout to the podium stand in between coaching his wrestlers.

That’s not much of an exaggeration though. The Millionaires had ten wrestlers compete in either the first- or third-place finals at Jersey Shore High School on Saturday evening, and Nasdeo placed a fourth-place bronze, silver or gold medal on each one of them.

“That’s big, especially with team we had last year. Everyone’s kind of just stepped up, especially in the last couple of weeks,” Williamsport senior Cael Nasdeo said. “We almost made team states again, which was big. I thought everyone wrestled well. It took the first couple weeks of the season for these younger guys to step up, but they’re doing a great job.”

Cael Nasdeo (121 pounds) was one of five Millionaires to wrestle in the first-place bouts. He, along with Collin Nasdeo (107), were district champions. The Millionaires’ Carter Weaver (145), Nariq Burks (215) and Brycen Delker (285) took silver.

Luke Segraves (114) was a third-place finisher, and Williamsport’s Marissa Rumsey (127), Ryan Dunlap (139) and Jackson Raker (172) all took fourth.

All advanced to next weekend’s Class AAA regional tournament at Altoona as the top 5 finishers in each weight moved on. Williamsport’s Gavin Reed came up just shy of advancing with a 9-7 loss to Punxsutawney’s Brice Rowan at 152 in the fifth-place bout.

For Cael Nasdeo, he did what he’s done essentially all season and dominated his opponent. After receiving a bye into the semifinals, Nasdeo needed just 38 seconds to pin Jersey Shore’s Mason Winter to secure a spot in the regional tournament. In the final, Nasdeo defeated Selinsgrove’s Nathan Martin with a fall in 1 minute, 46 seconds.

Nasdeo gets out fast in his bouts on the offensive and wants to bring opponents down as quickly as he can.

“I mean that’s what I like to do. I like to get my offense and get to my attacks right away. Kind of wish I got the bar a little quicker, but he did a good job defending it,” Nasdeo noted. “It’s kind of my go to, but I don’t know, I thought it was a good day.”

For Nasdeo, he became a four-time district champion on Saturday, something the top-ranked wrestler in Pennsylvania at 121 pounds is proud of accomplishing.

“It feels good and means a lot. We have all the district champs in the practice room on the wall. there’s very few four timers, so it’s pretty cool to be one of the top district wrestlers,” Nasdeo said. “It means a lot actually.”

Weaver was a second-place finisher for the Millionaires, and wrestled phenomenal throughout the tournament. Like Nasdeo, Weaver also received a first-round bye before he made quick work of Punxsutawney’s Ezekiel Bennett in 69 seconds. In the finals against Bradford’s Jordan Thompson, Weaver did a great job establishing the offense early on. He got two fast points in the first 40 seconds thanks to turning Thompson in the match but Thompsonused a late reversal to score two points to tie it. An escape gave Thompson a lead in the second period, 3-2.

And although Weaver battled him consistently throughout the match, Thompson was able to keep an edge late and hold off Weaver for a 5-4 decision over the Millionaire.

“He was just a tough, tough wrestler. He didn’t really make many mistakes and just the ones I did make, he capitalized on them,” Weaver said. “I just give him credit for kind of what he did. But I think I can compete at a higher level than that.”

Weaver attacked low in the third period early to try to get points and blocked a great low attack by Thompson to keep it a one-point match.

“I’ve put everything I had out there. I just made some little mistakes in the match, both on top and then on my feet in a little scramble there, I made some mistakes and gave up some points,” Weaver said. “It’s a little bittersweet to end districts that way. But I’m excited to continue competing the rest of the year and I think I can find myself in a pretty good spot at the end of the year if I fix those mistakes at the end.”

Williamsport’s Brycen Delker wrestled tight matches to get to the final. He received a bye into the semifinals and outlasted Selinsgrove’s Jack Peters, a 25-win wrestler, with a narrow 5-3 decision win. He then battled DuBois’ Zach Gallagher, another 25-win wrestler, in the final and came up just shy in a solid match 3-2 SV.

“Obviously this year we knew we wouldn’t have same level of wrestlers as we did last year and previous years. Most of what it was this year, we knew that the some guys who had to step up and make improvements. They’ve been able to do that and I’m real proud of them as a teammate and I now coach Nasdeo is real proud of them as a coach,” Weaver said of the team’s success on Saturday afternoon. “We all have the same expectations that I have for myself. We just need to improve constantly and we need to reset for the next level. Nasdeo talks a lot about attitude and effort in the practice room. That’s a given and it’s showing today with 10 wrestlers moving onto regionals.”

At 107, Collin Nasdeo defeated DuBois’ Antonio Giambanco by major decision, 13-3. Burks was pinned at 215 by Shikellamy’s Mason Rebuck in 58.

In the third-round matches, Segraves earned a first-period fall against CMVT’s Zander Billings with just seven seconds to go in the period to secure a third-place finish.

Rumsey battled Shikellamy’s Daniel Hernandez tough at 127 in the third-place bout. Hernandez won, 5-3, but Rumsey fought until the final horn to try to counter and pick up points. At 139, Punxsutawney’s David Kunselman picked up a tech fall win against Dunlap, 15-0, 3:40. At 172, it was Shikellamy’s Matt Shaffer who defeated Raker by decision, 5-0.
