Johnson brothers successful yet again

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Muncy's Scott Johnson has his hand raised after winning the 215 pound title at Saturday's King of the Mountain tournament against Greater Latrobe's Corey Boerio.

Scott Johnson is glad that both he and his brother are having a lot of success on the wrestling mats. But, Scott does have to sit around and wait for the 215-pound bout to roll around to watch his brother.

That can be a little annoying for the older Johnson, but hey, it’s family right?

“I kind of hate having to stay longer for the 215 because it’s at the end, but it’s great,” Scott said with a laugh. “We grew up all these tournaments together, nice that he’s finally seeing a ton of success that he’s had these last three years.”

Both Johnson brothers left Williamsport’s Magic Dome on Saturday with gold medals draped around their necks. Scott, ranked No. 2 in the state, defeated Midd-West’s Conner Heckman, ranked No. 3, at 133 pounds by decision in a close contest, 3-2, using a huge second-period takedown to secure the win.

For Austin, he recorded a first-period fall against Montoursville’s Cole Yonkin in 71 seconds at 215. Austin is ranked No. 1 in the state at his weight.

Both Muncy wrestlers are wrestling exceptionally well this year. The younger Johnson is 32-0, and has won six consecutive bouts by fall, none lasting more than 1 minute, 38 seconds. And not only is he undefeated, his last close match came against Fort LeBoeuf’s Danny Church on Jan. 14 in which Austin won by decision, 9-5. Prior to that, his last win that wasn’t a fall, major decision or tech fall came on Dec. 30 in an 8-3 win against Eli Makel of Waynesburg Central.

Austin has come up with some big wins this year, including defeating Greater Latrobe’s Corey Boerio by major decision, 13-5, a sixth-place finisher in Class AAA last year and Class AAA seventh-place finisher Connor Jacobs of Armstrong.

For Scott, his season has been just as impressive. Scott is 30-5 this year and has had numerous tough matches. In fact, his season results looks like a who’s who of some of the state’s toughest competition. Of his 45 bouts this year, all but 10 have come against a wrestler who was a returning sectional, district, regional or state qualifier or medalist.

Scott took returning state champion Dalton Perry of Central Mountain through three periods before Perry recorded a fall in 5:33 to win earlier in the year. The two fought again and Scott lost 8-3 SV to the Wildcat standout.

Scott also has defeated Barvitskie of Southern Columbia, a returning state medalist in Class AA; Northern Yorks Rocco Fratelli, a returning Class AAA qualifier; returning state qualifier Caiden Puderbach of Hughesville (twice); returning state fourth-placer JoJo Przybycien of Fort LeBoeuf; returning state qualifier in Class AA Parker Pisarchick of Brockway; and returning state Class AAA qualifier Darius McMillon of Peters Township.

A tough gauntlet of competition, but Scott likely wouldn’t have it any other way. Those tough opponents keep Scott on his toes, literally.

“This has been my hardest year, my whole high school career. It’s definitely good because I’m used to wresting good kids every match so I don’t lay back like ‘oh I’m going out here and gonna pin this match,'” Scott said. “I got to wrestle the same for everybody and just gives me the confidence going into environments like this with tough matches and not being affected by it.”

It’s only helped Scott get better, day by day, match by match.

“I mean you’re nervous for all those tough matches, it might be nice to go on a weekend and go 5-0 with five pins, but that’s not what’s going to help you in the postseason when it really counts,” Scott said.

Scott and Austin each have similar expectations and hopes for regionals, and that’s to get out of the Class AA Northeast Regional this weekend and get back to Hershey.

“I’m just going to keep it rolling, win everything and end the season with a gold medal,” Scott said.
