Local roundup: Lycoming splits doubleheader with DeSales, wins first home game in 52 years

By From staff reports 8 min read

A sixth-run fifth inning in the first game of Saturday’s MAC Freedom doubleheader with DeSales University helped propel the Lycoming College baseball team to a 9-5 win in its first home game in 52 years at Bowman Field. DeSales was able to hold on for an 8-4 win in the second game.

Down 5-0 heading into the fourth inning of the first game, the Warrior rally started when freshman Nick Hoheb led off with a walk, setting up a triple off the base of the left field wall from sophomore Jake Schilling. Freshman Kai Foster walked and a sac fly by first-year Zachary Pleska drove in Schilling. A throwing error on a fielder’s choice was followed by a single from freshman Zach Kudlacik and a fielder’s choice brought Foster in, cutting the lead to 5-3.

In the fifth inning, freshman Greg Wirin led off with a single before a fielder’s choice allowed Hoheb to reach. Schilling walked and after a lineout, the Warriors got the next six batters to reach base with two outs. Pleska walked to load the bases, freshman Josh Bottger tied the game with a single into right center. After he stole second, Kudlacik walked to reload the bases.

An error helped Lycoming take the lead before junior Braden Campbell walked to drive in Bottger, setting up a two-RBI single into center field from Wirin.

DeSales loaded the bases in the sixth, but freshman Jake Wilbur responded with a flyout and groundout to end the inning. In the seventh, freshman Evan Nordeen struck out the side, giving Lycoming its first home win since a 12-2 win over Juniata on April 24, 1971.

Jake Wagner went 3 for 5 with a home run, seven RBIs, scored twice and was walked twice as Penn College cruised past Penn State Abington, 18-6, in a United East contest.

The win moves the Wildcats to 6-7 and 2-1 in the UE.

Penn College scored eight runs in the top of the sixth inning to pull away and out-hit PSU Abington, 14-9.

Quinn Hanafin went 3 for 6, Cameron Dick was 2 for 6 and Nathan Gutskey was 3 for 4 with a double, home run, four RBIs and four runs scored.

Bucknell bounced back from a tough loss in the opener of a doubleheader at Navy with a convincing 17-4 win in the nightcap, and the Bison earned a split. Shortstop Anthony Sherwin was the star of the day for Bucknell, going 4 for 4 with six runs batted in game two to cap off a six-hit afternoon.

After dropping Friday's game 8-6 and Saturday's opener 7-6 - two games that featured wild momentum swings throughout - Bucknell piled up a season-high 17 runs in game three of the series and now has a chance to gain a weekend split when the two teams meet again on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Henry Mitchell's walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning was the difference in Saturday's opener, which included a combined five home runs.

Mansfield fell in a pair of one-run games, 9-8 and 4-3, on the road to PSAC foe Shepherd.

In game one, the Rams scored a run in the first to take the first lead of the game, but the Mounties responded with a four-spot in the top of the second thanks to a two-run double by Jeffrey Coakley and an additional RBI from Brittain Shander and Ryan Verbonitz to take a 4-1 lead into the third.

However, the Rams erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead, 9-4.

In the nightcap, the Mounties again jumped out to the games first lead with two runs in the top of the first before adding an insurance run two innings later to lead 3-1 heading into the bottom of the third.

Pitcher Kevin Worek threw a complete-game on the way to victory in game one and the Bald Eagle bats soared in game two as the Lock Haven University baseball team swept No. 9 West Chester.

Behind Worek's strong outing, LHU won game one 4-3, and Lock Haven scored 11 runs on 14 hits, and completed the sweep with an 11-8 game-two victory. With the sweep, the Bald Eagles took the important early-season PSAC Eastern Division series.

The sweep helped Lock Haven improve to 9-7 overall and 3-3 in PSAC East play.

The aforementioned Worek was a huge part of the story in the game-one victory, as he grinded out the win with a workmanlike outing.

He went the distance in improving to an impressive 4-1 on the season. Worek scattered seven hits over seven innings, and allowed three runs. He struck out six WCU batters and didn't surrender a walk in the complete-game win.

• Senior Owen Zimmerman scored four goals to move into sixth on the school's all-time scoring list with 123 goals to highlight the day for the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team, which fell to Montclair State, 20-10, in non-conference action.

Zimmerman added an assist, and a ground ball as he climbed past Jim Cusick '08, who scored 121 goals, into sixth on the program's all-time goals list, finishing the game three goals from the top five in program history. He also moved within two points of ninth in program history in points, where Ethan Payne '12 sits with 167 points.

Sophomore Troy Scozzafava scored three goals and notched two assists and Joey Hoover finished with three goals and a ground ball for the Warriors (2-6 overall).

Senior Josh Hall picked up a team-high seven ground balls. Sophomore Jakob Switzer caused two turnovers, and sophomore Colin Manankil won a season-high 15 faceoffs.

Penn College overcame an 8-6 halftime deficit to beat Immaculata, 15-13, in a non-conference game. The Wildcats improved to 6-2, while the Mighty Macs fell to 4-3.

After Camden Elmo gave Penn College an early 1-0 lead, Immaculata scored three-straight to lead 3-1. Elmo made it 3-2 with 3:49 left in the first before the Macs added another score to take a 4-2 advantage at the end of the first.

Croix Teter and Quinn Caviola netted back-to-back goals to start the second and tie the game at 4. After Sam Hills and Caviola gave PCT a 6-5 lead, the Macs ended the half with three unanswered and an 8-6 halftime lead.

• Navy used five goals apiece from Leelee Denton and Emily Messinese and a wide disparity in draw controls to outlast Bucknell, 21-13, in the Patriot League women's lacrosse action.

Alex Nesbitt and Allie Boyce recorded hat tricks for the Bison, who saw their four-game winning streak come to an end.

Now 4-3 on the season and 0-1 in Patriot League play, the Bison scored 13 goals - their most-ever against Navy - on just 24 shots.

Taylor Kopan added two goals, and Emily Baird and Taylor McClain both had a goal and two assists, but while the offense was scoring efficiently, the Midshipmen piled up a big advantage in time of possession thanks to a 27-11 edge on the draw circle.

Lock Haven was edged at Gannon, 14-13. Gabby Gunnip led the way for Lock Haven as she finished with five goals.

Emma Williams netted a hat trick, and Abby Katrinak scored three goals and recorded one assist.

Junior Rylie Cranmer scored her first career hat trick to help lead the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team to an 11-7 victory over Buffalo State.

Freshman Riley Block scored four goals to go with two assists and a ground ball. Sophomore Katie Maguire notched another four goals, four ground balls, two caused turnovers and three draw controls. Cranmer's three goals accompanied two ground balls, two caused turnovers, and a team-leading four draw control wins.

Senior Madison Wineburg led the team with five ground balls in addition to three caused turnovers that were matched by senior Tess Arnold.

• Harrison Gold's three-set win at No. 1 singles clinched the Bucknell men's tennis team's 11th straight victory, a 5-2 verdict over Chestnut Hill. The Bison, who have not lost dropping a 4-3 match to Villanova on Feb. 4, are now 11-4 on the season heading into a key stretch of Patriot League matches.

Bucknell avenged last season's loss to Chestnut Hill (6-4), a very good Division II program from Philadelphia. The Bison now own the fifth-longest winning streak in school history.

Bucknell won 23 straight bridging the 1970 and 1971 seasons, and the team has also seen 15-match streaks in 1926/1927, 1937/1938, and 1998.
