South Williamsport defeated Bloomsburg in boys tennis, 5-0, in the Mounties' season opener. Kade Sanford won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Wyatt Robbins picked up p 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles.
In doubles action, South Williamsport's Lucas Bower and Landyn Gephart earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory and Jack Reid and Matt Reid won at No. 2 doubles, 6-3, 6-2.
Montoursville beat Galeton, 4-1. James Kehrer (No. 1 singles) and Tyler Lauchle (No. 3) both won for the Warriors in three sets. Kehrer won, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, and Lauchle had a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 match.
Central Mountain came up just shy against Central Columbia, 3-2. David Lindsay earned a straight-set 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles for the Wildcats over Luke Hottenstein. Lindsay did not drop a game in his win.
The Wildcats' doubles team of Nate Brinker and Nick Piergalini won at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 7-5.
Hughesville blanked Selinsgrove, 5-0, to improve to 3-0. Josh Finnegan won at No. 1 singles against Christopher Feiler, 7-5, 6-0, and Mason Thomas beat Benjamin Rowan in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
Austin McKeon earned a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles for the Spartans.
• Central Mountain beat DuBois, 14-1, in baseball on the road. Cru Stover picked up the win, pitching four innings and allowed just one run on two hits with six strikeouts. Dallas Alexander threw an inning of relief.
Offensively, the Wildcats collected 14 hits from DuBois' pitchers. Gardner Fravel, Elek Fravel, Kelvin Probst and Kevin Grenninger each had multiple hits as Gardner Fravel went 3 for 3 to lead the team. Probst had two stolen bases.
Wellsboro opened its season strong, rallying from a four-run fifth inning deficit and defeating Canton, 14-7. The Hornets erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning to take the lead before adding four more in the seventh. Blake Hamblin with 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, while winning pitcher Caden Smith had a hit and three RBIs. Cam Brought was outstanding in relief, earning a three-inning save, allowing no runs and striking out six. Weston Bellows went 2 for 2 with a double and RBI for Canton.
Aidan Vogt had a big day at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a run in St. John Neumann’s 8-1 loss at Bloomsburg. Kane Wright scattered one hit in 2 2/3 innings pitched and also went 2 for 3. Mark Roman and Andrew Walter added hits for the Knights in their season opener.
• Penn College extended their win streak to three games with a baseball doubleheader sweep of Gallaudet University on Friday afternoon. The Wildcats won game one 4-2 and game two 9-7. The wins push the Wildcats overall record to above .500 at 9-8 (4-1 UEC) while the Bison drop to 7-16 (1-4 UEC).
Leading 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning of game one, Tyler Rudolph ripped an RBI double to right that scored Quinn Hanafin from second to extend the Wildcats lead to 3-0. The Bison pushed a run across the plate in the top of the fourth to make it a 3-1 game. Hanafin hit an RBI triple that bounced right before the left center wall in the bottom half of the fourth to once again give the Wildcats a three-run lead at 4-1.
In game two, the Bison jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two runs in the first and one in the top of the second. Cameron Dick's single in the bottom of the second put Penn College on the board and Jacob Carles' sacrifice fly in the third made it a one-run game.
The Wildcats exploded for five runs in the fourth on RBIs from Jake Wagner, Quinn Hanafin, and Carles, and a two-run error by Gallaudet. The Bison pulled within two with a pair of runs in the sixth before Carles got those runs back on a two-run single in the bottom of the frame. The Bison added a pair of unearned runs in the seventh.
Ryan Verbonitz hit his third homer of the season to give the Mansfield University baseball team (5-12, 0-6 PSAC East) a chance, but West Chester University (14-6, 4-3 PSAC East) finished on top, 8-4, in a PSAC contest.
The Mounties outhit the Golden Rams, 11-9, but couldn't get the timely hit they needed and committed four errors in the field while West Chester finished with just one.
Joining Verbonitz with multiple hits for MU was Jacob Houtz and Brittain Shander, who each finished with three. Houtz doubled twice and drove in a run, while Zachary Shertzer also added a double and an RBI.
Lock Haven fell to visiting Kutztown, 4-1, in game-one of a three-game PSAC Eastern Division series.
Kutztown scored four runs on eight hits and Lock Haven plated a run late in the game on five total hits in the scheduled nine-inning game.
Bucknell continued its recent surge with dominant performances on the mound and at the plate in a doubleheader sweep of Patriot League rival Lafayette.
Chris DiFiore tossed a two-hit shutout and Anthony Sherwin went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in an 11-0 win in the opener, and Will Greer pitched one-hit ball over seven innings in Bucknell's 20-2 rout in the nightcap.
Now 10-11 overall and 4-2 in the Patriot League, the Bison have won five straight and eight of their last 10 games. Lafayette fell to 3-19 overall and 0-2 in league play and saw its losing streak grow to 11.
DiFiore twirled his first career shutout in game one, allowing only two hits and a walk while striking out five. Greer picked right up where DiFiore left off, taking a perfect game into the fifth in game two. He conceded only an unearned run on one hit with eight strikeouts and one walk over seven innings.
Offensively, the Bison piled up 31 runs on 31 hits and drew 17 walks from eight different Leopards pitchers. The 31 runs were Bucknell's most in a single doubleheader since scoring 34 (15-3 and 19-1) against Clarion in 2012. This was the team's third-highest output ever in a Patriot League doubleheader, behind only the 33 runs against Lafayette in 2000 and 32 against Holy Cross in 1996.
• Forcing a tiebreaking third set at No. 2 singles, junior Luke Leach, a Wellsboro graduate, came back for the deciding fifth point, his second win of the day, as the Lycoming College men's tennis team downed Mount Aloysius College, 6-3, for its second straight win.
Leach, dropped his first set to Matt Jacobs, 7-5, but struck back in the second set to down Jacobs, 6-4 to force the tiebreaking third set. Leach won the tiebreaker, 10-3, to clinch the match.
In the No. 1 doubles position with senior teammate Nathan Redell, a Wellsboro graduate, Leach defeated Cole Kazmierczyk and Jacobs, 8-4.
Senior Jason Anderson also gave the Warriors two wins. In the No. 3 singles spot, Anderson defeated Lucas Letizia, 6-3, 6-4, after downing Letizia and Zach Johnson with sophomore Mohammed Ebeid, 8-5.
