Local roundup: Hughesville baseball falls in tough game vs. Mount Carmel 2-0

Logan Kiess, Aiden Barlett and Tyler Wetzel all had two hits but Mount Carmel played excellent defense and scored two fourth inning runs to blank Hughesville, 2-0.

The Tornadoes pulled within a game of first-place Hughesville (10-2) in the HAC-III standings. Barlett hit a double and Dylan Bieber and Jed Webb held Mount Carmel scoreless in five of six innings pitched.

• Mansfield’s baseball team split with Bloomsburg in a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader. The Mounties fell in a 3-2 pitcher’s duel in game one before winning the nightcap, 11-7.

With the victory in game two, Mansfield improves to 13-28 overall and 4-17 in the PSAC East while the Huskies fall to 22-14 overall and 12-9 in conference.

Prior to the start of game one, the Mountaineers honored their eight seniors: Brittain Shander, Zach Spray, Josh Colon, Lorenzo Febbo, Justin Marykwas, Scott Poulson, Josh Farina and Alan Bautista.

Every senior contributed on Saturday, as Shander, Farina, Spray and Bautista all recorded hits, while Febbo, Marykwas, Poulson, and Colon took the mound in the Mounties’ game-two victory.

Catchers Jake Wortman and Nic Adamo came through with clutch hits in the late innings in each game, Sean Keys had another game-winning knock, and Bucknell added two more come-from-behind, last-at-bat wins in a doubleheader sweep of Holy Cross.

The Bison won 4-2 and 7-5 and not only clinched a Patriot League Tournament spot, but they lowered their magic number to one over Navy to potentially earn the No. 2 seed if they also stay ahead of fourth-place Lafayette.

Bucknell was slow to get the bats going in both games, as Holy Cross held a normally potent offense to one run through five innings in the opener and one run through six in the nightcap. But the Bison rallied in the late innings to win both games, making it 15 come-from-behind victories this season and eight in which the winning run came in their final at-bat.

The Bison had struggled mightily against Holy Cross in recent years, as the Crusaders had won 12 of the previous 14 meetings entering this series. That included a doubleheader sweep of the Bison on Apr. 3 in Worcester.

The Warriors (8-8 overall, 4-4 MAC Freedom) clinched the No. 5 seed at the MAC Freedom Championship and will head to No. 4 seed Arcadia University (8-9 overall, 5-3 MAC Freedom) for a 7 p.m. game on Monday night, clinching the spot due to Arcadia’s 20-11 win over DeSales on Saturday. FDU-Florham (9-8 overall, 7-1 MAC Freedom) enters the tournament as the No. 3 seed, despite tying with No. 1 Stevens and No. 2 Misericordia for the No. 1 spot in the conference standings.
