Quinn Ranck threw six innings of three-hit baseball and also shined at the plate Friday as Montoursville pounded Wyoming Valley West, 11-1. Ranck went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, while striking out seven.
Cole Johnson also had two hits and drove in a game-high three runs, while Matthew Conklin doubled and scored three times, helping Montoursville improve to 3-0.
• Junior Kylie Segraves, a Williamsport graduate, had five hits and four runs to lead the Lycoming College softball team, as it downed Delaware Valley University to keep hold of first-place in the MAC Freedom with an 8-4 win in the first game and 10-0 in five innings in the second game.
Russell went 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, a double and a stolen base in the first game, freshman Claire Alexander, a South Williamsport graduate, went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI and junior Rachel DeWolfe went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Lycoming (16-6 overall, 7-1 MAC Freedom) responded with a five-run second after Delaware Valley (5-18-1 overall, 0-8 MAC Freedom) took the lead with two runs in the top of the inning. Eiswerth singled to lead off before freshman Megan Gorsuch reached on a bunt single.
After a sac bunt, Alexander reached on an infield single to load the bases before Segraves doubled to left to drive in two runs and senior Megan Wetzel, a Central Mountain graduate, followed with another double to score another run. DeWolfe singled into left and a groundout brought in Wetzel with the fifth run of the game.
Kylie Bornman and Fallon Kelley hit their first career home runs to lead Mansfield in a PSAC East doubleheader against Shippensburg University, but the Raiders left Helen Lutes Field with a 12-3, 9-6 sweep.
In the nightcap, the Mounties (9-19, 0-16 PSAC East) fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first but quickly cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame when Melissa Demo singled up the middle to plate Kayla Vonstein.
The Raiders (15-10, 9-5 PSAC East) got the run back in the second, but the Mounties knotted the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the third when Kelley hit an RBI-single that plated a pair after a Shippensburg error in centerfield.
The Raiders again took the lead in the top of the fourth, 4-3, before Borman answered with a bomb to left field to tie the score at 4-4.
Penn College swept a twin-bill with Gallaudet University, 10-0 and 9-1.
Penn College scored nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings as they run ruled Gallaudet 10-0 in six innings. Maddie Hurst hit a two-run home run to left in the bottom of the fifth-inning and Ivvy Morder walked the game off in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run shot to left to give the Wildcats the 10-0 victory.
MacKenzie Weaver (7-3) continued her strong season in the circle as she notched her third complete game shutout of the season. Weaver struck out seven over six innings allowing just one hit. Hurst led the Wildcats from the plate with a perfect 4-for-4 effort with three RBI’s and three runs scored. Jordan Specht had three hits, two RBI’s and two runs scored.
In game two, Penn College plated five runs in the bottom of the third-inning with Ivvy Morder launching her second home run of the afternoon to left center. Leading 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth the Wildcats plated four runs on a two-rbi single by Johanna Devore, an RBI single by Kyla Benner and sac fly to center by Madison Shaffer.
• Starting pitcher Aedan Walter struck out seven and he got early run support as the Lock Haven University baseball team beat Shippensburg, 6-2, in the opener of an important PSAC Eastern Division series.
Walter got the nod and worked the first seven innings. Over seven innings, he scattered four hits, walked four and struck out the seven Shippensburg batters. Walter allowed just one run.
In all, two Lock Haven pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts today in the scheduled nine-inning game. Sean Brennan struck out three over the final two innings.
The Bald Eagle bats got going quickly today and scored four in the bottom of the first. LHU added a run in the second and one more in the fourth.
Blaise Zeiders sparked the offense with a four-hit game. He was 4 for 5 with three RBIs and a run scored.
Austin Lewis threw a gem and five different players drove in runs to lead the Mansfield University baseball team to a 6-0 victory in game one to earn a split with Salem University to kick off a four-game non-conference series at Frank Loria Memorial Field. The Mounties fell, 5-0, in game two.
In game one, the Mounties (6-19 overall) were efficient with their opportunities on offense, plating six runs on as many hits, coming from five different players. The Mounties did not commit an error, while the Tigers (13-19 overall) suffered from two.
Brittain Shander, Jacob Houtz (3B), Marcus Nales, Jeffrey Coakley, and Brett Stewart drove in runs for MU.
Lewis limited Salem to two runs (one earned) in 5 and 1/3 innings of work, adding four strikeouts. Bobby Curry threw the final inning and 2/3, surrendering just one hit and no runs.
It took until the fourth inning, but the Mounties erased an early 1-0 deficit with two runs thanks to an RBI-single by Coakley and heads-up baserunning by Zachary Shertzer, who stole third before coming around to score on the play.
Penn College won its third-straight game with a 3-1 win over Wells College in a United East baseball game Friday. The Wildcats improved to 8-1 United East, 13-9 overall.
Anthony Barbella’s single to center in the second put Penn College ahead 1-0 before an error in the fourth plated Nathan Gustkey to give the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage. Cameron Dick’s double to left in the sixth added cushion, while Wells tacked on a late run in the ninth.
Ben Bretzman improved to 3-2 with a complete-game effort. He scattered six hits, allowed one earned, struck out five, and walked zero batters.
Gustkey and Dick led the offense with two hits each.
• Matthew Muthler of the Lock Haven University men's outdoor track and field team turned in a sensational effort at the two-day Susquehanna Multi Meet. He placed third of 16 with 6,013 points in the decathlon.
The 6,013-point tally is the best mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference this season.
Muthler was third in the javelin throw (147-04) and he won the final event of the competition - the 1,500-meter run with a remarkable effort of 4:14.92.
The 4:14.92 is believed to be one of the fastest 1,500's ever run by a Division II athlete in the decathlon. Today's other events included the 110-meter hurdles, discus throw and pole vault.
• Lock Haven defeated East Stroudsburg, 6-1, in a women’s tennis match. Friday marked the first match of the weekend. Lock Haven will be right back in action Saturday where the Bald Eagles are looking forward to honoring seniors Delani Wolever, Montoursville graduate Maddy Reeves and Ellie Flynn.
Williamsport graduate Mia Shuler, Central Mountain graduate Olivia Anastos, Wolever, Christy McLean and Olivia Sharp all won during singles play today at ESU.
• Down 9-6 with 8:03 left in the third quarter, sophomore Katie Maguire nailed a shot from the top of the crease that kickstarted a second half comeback for the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team in a 13-10 non-conference victory over Manhattanville College.
Maguire, who is two goals shy of becoming the 16th player in program history to reach 100 career goals, found the back of the cage four times, picking up a ground ball, and winning a team-high seven draw controls. Freshman Riley Block also notched four goals, an assist, grabbing two ground balls and causing two turnovers. Senior Tess Arnold, sophomore Alexa Baldwin, sophomore Kailey Stocker, junior Jess Shaver and junior Rylie Cranmer all notched a goal each.
Naldwin led the team with two assists and seniors Madison Wineburg and Gabriella Haug led the Warriors (6-4 overall) with three ground balls each.
