Coen Riegner hit a walk-off single which scored Angelo Ferrigno as Hughesville defeated Loyalsock, 6-5 in a thrilling, intense game in front of a big crowd Wednesday at Bodine Park in baseball on Wednesday.
The Spartans (5-0, 2-0 HAC-III) produced big hits in the last two innings with Eli Olshefskie hitting a go-ahead single in the sixth before Loyalsock tied it in the top of the seventh.
Carter Cowburn, Austin Gray and winning pitcher Jed Webb combined on a one-hitter as Hughesville took the second straight in this rivalry series after Loyalsock (2-2, 1-1) had rallied from a three-run deficit to twice tie it late. Jackson Bower and Tyler Wetzel both had two hits and doubles for Hughesville, while Ferrigno was 1 for 2 with a double, two walks and two runs. Dylan Bower hit a two-run double for Loyalsock and Tyler Gee scored twice.
Montoursville also won an exciting one-run game, holding off a Mifflinburg comeback and defeating the Wildcats, 9-8. The Warriors (2-0) won their second straight one-run game against a tough opponent after downing defending District 4 Class AAA champion Central Columbia by one run Monday.
Matthew Conklin threw 5 2/3 strong innings to earn the win, scattering four hits before Grayson Rinker worked a perfect seventh to seal the win. Aiden Evans went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, while Cael Frame was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Conklin drove in two runs as did James Batkowski and Rinker was 1 for 2 with two runs.
Kaiser Kistner earned his first varsity win by throwing six outstanding innings and combining with Noah Turner on a four-hitter as South Williamsport defeated Troy, 6-4.
Kistner allowed no earned runs and struck out six before Turner threw a hitless seventh to earn the save after South broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the top of the seventh. Tadd Lusk went 2 for 4 with a double for South, while freshman Trace Wertz hit a two-run double.
Alex Neidig and Kaden Shay each went 1 for 2 and combined for three runs. Kistner helped his pitching cause with a hit and RBI.
• Nolah Moyer struck out 15 and Taylor Shannon went 2 for 2 with two RBIs as Muncy held off a Montgomery comeback and edged the defending Class A state champions, 3-2.
Muncy scored three third-inning runs to take a lead it did not relinquish. Moyer hit an RBI single and Shannon a two-run single that inning as Muncy improved to 5-0 and defeated Montgomery for the first time since 2018. Freshman Ava Hartman pitched outstanding in relief for Montgomery (2-2), throwing three scoreless innings. Sloan Wooten and Madisyn Miller both had hits and runs while Vallyn Ault hit an RBI single.
Lizzie Weller dominated at the plate and in the pitching circle, helping St. John Neumann defeat Sugar Valley, 12-5. Weller entered with one out in the first inning and scattered three hits while striking out a career-high 15.
She was even more potent at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a home run, triple, double and seven RBIs as Neumann scored 10 first-inning runs after trailing 3-0. Gigi Parlante went 2 for 3 and scored twice, while Brianna Lisi was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Lily Reid doubled and Breanna Nixon went 1 for 2.
Warrior Run took a one-run lead into the sixth inning after trailing by five runs an inning earlier but Central Columbia fought back and won, 14-8. The Blue Jays scored six seventh inning runs to break a tie. Ava Klingerman hit a grand slam to fuel the team’s 17-hit offense.
Lakesha Hauck went 3 for 5 with an RBI for Warrior Run while Kayla Swartchick homered, doubled and drove in two runs. Mackenzie Watts added two hits.
Kayla Fowler had a home run as Sullivan County cruised past Benton in a rout, 15-0. The Griffins scored six in the first inning and seven in the second.
Benton was limited to just one hit.
Karlee Wettlaufer went 2 for 2 with three RBIs and three runs scored to lead Sullivan County. Mariah Hallabuk had a double.
• Asha Hohmuth won the 100 in 13.12 seconds and picked up a win in the 200 in 27.21 to help Lewisburg secure a 99-47 win against Montoursville in girls track and field.
Hohmuth also helped Lewisburg’s 400 and 1,600 relay teams earn wins. Another two-event winner for Lewisburg was Baylee Espinosa who had wins in the 800 (2:30.16) and 1,600 (5:27.04).
Montoursville’s Emma Cline won the 300 hurdles in 48.91 seconds. Montoursville’s Jayden Phillips earned a win in the high jump by clearing 4 feet, 6 inches. Anna Baylor was a two-event winner for the Warriors after winning the shot put with a throw of 28-4 and the discus with a distance of 89-6.
• Montoursville’s Mason Winslow and Lewisburg’s Jeremy Sanchez Rodriguez ran two close races in the 100 and 200 as they finished 1-2, respectively, in both events. Winslow won with a time of 11.48 and 22.66, respectively, and Sanchez Rodriguez had times of 11.66 and 23.85.
Lewisburg won, 98-51, in the boys track and field dual.
Lewisburg’s Jonathan Hess won the 1,600 with a time of 4:43.51 and won the 3,200 in 10:14.77. Lewisburg’s Jacob Gose won the shot put with a distance of 40-10 1/2. Montoursville’s Nate Fisher threw a 124-0 to win the discus and Bryce Eberhart picked up a win in the javelin by throwing 122-0.
• Hughesville defeated South Williamsport in boys tennis, 4-1. Mason Thomas picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles for the Spartans and Austin McKeon won 6-2, 6-1 against Luke Sanford at No. 2 singles.
The Mounties’ lone victory came at No. 1 singles where Kade Sanford beat John Finnegan in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.
The win moves Hughesville to 4-1.
Wellsboro defeated Cowanesque Valley, 3-2, as the Green Hornets swept the singles competition.
Montoursville fell to Central Columbia, 4-1. The Warriors’ win came at No. 2 doubles where Teli Bobotas and Josh Wentzler earned a 6-4, 6-3 win against Luke Saracoglu and Seth Priestman. In singles action, James Kehrer fell to Luke Hottenstein, 6-2, 6-1.
The loss to the Blue Jays was just the second of the year for Montoursville.
Jersey Shore won all three singles contests to pick up a3-2 win against Muncy. Eli Bower won a three-set contest at No. 1 singles, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 against Rowan Revata. Matt Fravel won, 6-0, 6-4, against Michael Howard at No. 2 singles.
The Bulldogs’ Kohen Meyer and Eli Harris (No. 1 doubles) and Eli Slamka and Alex Messenger (No. 2 doubles) both won.
• A goal from just outside the goal crease at 14:18 in the second quarter helped sophomore Katie Maguire reach 100 career points, as the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team ran past Delaware Valley, 18-2, in MAC Freedom action.
Maguire is the 21st player in program history to reach the mark, doing so in just 26 career games. She finished the night with five goals, an assist, a ground ball, and five draw controls. Freshman Riley Block led the Warriors with a career-high seven goals, an assist, caused a turnover, and won two draw controls and sophomore Kailey Stocker posted three goals, an assist, and two ground balls.
Sophomore Alexa Baldwin, junior Jess Shaver and senior Tess Arnold all notched a goal, as Baldwin posted three assists.
Arnold notched her 100th draw control win, leading the Warriors (5-4 overall, 2-0 MAC Freedom) through the game with 11, becoming the 11th Warrior to reach the mark.
• Using a six-goal run between the first and second quarters, the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team broke open the game before holding off Delaware Valley University late in a 12-10 MAC Freedom win.
Senior Owen Zimmerman paced the run, scoring three goals, helping him finish with seven in the game to give him 140 career goals, as he passed Lycoming Athletics Hall of Famer Shawn Rosa (2000) (135) for third on the all-time goals list. He also moved into seventh in program history with 182 career points, posting 140 goals and 42 assists in his career.
Sophomore Joey Hoover scored three goals and sophomore Sean Farrell added a goal and two assists.
• With wins from the last four singles slots, the Lycoming College men's tennis team clinched its first win over Wilkes University since 2002 in a 6-3 MAC Freedom victory.
The Warriors last had the upper hand over the Colonels on April 14, 2002, when they won 4-3 at home. Wilkes swept the Warriors in each of the last six matchups, but the Warriors still hold a 32-30 lead in the all-time series.
Senior Jason Anderson, who leads the Warriors in singles wins from the No. 3 spot, kicked off the singles portion of the dual by defeating Jonah Nguyen, 6-1, 6-4 for his ninth win of the year. At No. 4, junior Connor Albaugh, a Loyalsock graduate, forced a third set, falling in the first set, 6-7 (2) but came back with a 6-4, and was up 5-0 in the third set before Donovan Zong retired.
Freshman Domanick Young, a Montoursville graduate, finished off Ian Williams in a third set, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, at No. 5 and freshman Josh Neidert notched the meet-clinching fifth point with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, win at No. 6 over Drew Fiedler.
