Jersey Shore major softball advances in state tournament; one of four teams left

And then there were four.

Jersey Shore defeated Indiana in the elimination bracket of the Pennsylvania major softball state tournament on Saturday, 7-3, to become one of just four teams left in the state competing for the state championship.

The win moves Jersey Shore into Sunday’s elimination game against Caln at 5 p.m. The winner of that game plays again at 7 p.m. against Punxsutawney.

The state championship game is set for Monday at 5 p.m. in Fairchance against North Pocono.

Both teams collected eight hits apiece, but Jersey Shore didn’t allow Indiana to take advantage and rally. With the exception of the sixth inning, Indiana never saw more than five batters come up in a single inning. In the sixth, Indiana went through six batters before a strikeout ended it.

Jersey Shore went ahead 1-0 in the first and 2-0 at the end of the second. In the third, Jersey Shore scored twice. After. Emma Lehman reached on a walk and was moved to second on a sacrifice fly, an error allowed her to score and put Sophie Wrench on base. A triple by Aubree Reichard brought in Wrench and gave Jersey Shore a 4-0 lead.

Indiana scored in the bottom of thee fourth to break up the shutout and trailed 4-1. Jersey Shore added some insurance runs in the top of the sixth, however. A walk and two singles put runners on and an error brought in a run. Reichard then connected on a double to drive in two runs and gave Jersey Shore a 7-1 lead.

Indiana would score twice in the bottom of the inning, but Reichard recorded a strikeout for the third out and secured the win.

Reichard was huge not just in the circle, but also at the plate. She went 3 for 3 with two doubles and a triple while scoring a run. Annika Clark had a single, Azlyn Guerrero had a double, Zoe Lehman had a single and Ryleigh Eck had a single.

Reichard ended the game with seven strikeouts, issued just one walk and allowed only two extra-base hits.
