Lycoming names Mackin its new coach for men’s lacrosse

By From staff reports 2 min read

A 14-year collegiate coaching veteran with a history as a successful recruiter, Tony Mackin is set to rejoin his alma mater as the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team's eighth coach, Director of Athletics Mike Clark announced on Friday.

"We are excited to welcome Tony back home to Lycoming," Clark said. "Throughout the interview process, it was clear that Tony has great pride in his time as a Warrior and that he enjoyed his experience as a student-athlete at Lycoming College. Since that time, he has worked at many different institutions, at all levels of the NCAA, and gotten a reputation as a good recruiter as well as someone who can help his student-athletes improve in all aspects of the game."

Mackin -- a 2008 Lycoming graduate -- comes to Lycoming after spending the past seven years at Averett University in Danville, Virginia, where he started the men's lacrosse program. In six seasons, Mackin established the foundation for the Cougars in the USA South Athletic Conference before moving to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference for the 2022-23 academic year.

He produced the 2021 USA South Rookie of the Year, one Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State Selection and one Academic All-District honoree selected by the College Sports Communicators.

"I'd like to thank President Kent Trachte and Athletic Director Mike Clark for this great opportunity," Mackin said. "I am thrilled to be returning to Lycoming as the head men's lacrosse coach. Lycoming is a special community. I am excited to give other student-athletes the same dedication and support I received. I look forward to establishing a program that succeeds on campus both in the classroom and on the field."

Mackin also served as the associate head coach for three seasons at Division II Tusculum College, where he also helped start a fledgling men's lacrosse program in 2014. Over his final two seasons with the Pioneers, Mackin was the defensive coordinator after serving as the offensive coordinator his first year.

A native of Springfield, Virginia, Mackin was an assistant coach at Division I Virginia Military Institute, spending three years in Lexington, Va. from 2011-13, where he mentored Major League Lacrosse draft pick and NCAA statistical champion Stephen Robarge, who led the country with 10.15 groundballs per contest.
