West End 14s win first game in pool play at state tournament

West End’s 14-year-old Babe Ruth all-star team won their first game of the Pennsylvania state tournament’s pool play against Oxford, 10-0, on Saturday afternoon at Logue Field. West End plays Lackawanna on Sunday at 7 p.m. for the second game of pool play competition.

The single-elimination portion begins on Monday with four games being played and the championship is scheduled for Tuesday at noon.

Nate Crowe threw 4 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball, striking out eight batters before Zion Hughes came in and closed out the final two-thirds as the duo combined on a no-hitter.

Jaxson march and Mason Hess both collected big RBIs for West End in the game.

After a scoreless first inning, West End broke the game open with a big five-run second inning before then adding two runs in the third for a fast 7-0 lead. West End then scored three in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead by 10.

West End had just four hits in the game, and capitalized off Oxford’s five errors.

Trey Damschroder, Hess and Hughes all had singles and March had the game’s lone extra-base hit with a double.
