The center back in a tough defense that allowed just 17 shots in two games and then forced a draw with 2022 Liberty League champions Ithaca College, junior Emily Shultz has earned the Lycoming College women's soccer team's first career Landmark Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week award.
Shultz played all 270 minutes during a 1-0-2 week for the Warriors, as she combined with fellow defenders junior Madison Maihle (a Jersey Shore graduate), senior Taylor Snyder (a Milton graduate), sophomore Kate Finkbeiner and junior Haley Schafer to allow just two goals and 34 shots in the three games.
The Warriors (2-1-2 overall) started the week by allowing just six shots in a 7-1 win over Mount Aloysius, then allowed seven in a 0-0 tie with Keuka. In the final game of the week, Ithaca took 21 shots, but ended up allowing only one goal, which came directly off a corner kick. The Bombers took just eight shots on goal during the regular course of play.
Shultz, who missed the 2022 season due to an injury, has helped the Warriors post a 1.00 goals-against average with two shutouts in the season's first five games. She joins sophomore Aubrey Williamson, who earned the Landmark's Offensive Athlete of the Week on Sept. 5.
Lycoming is coming off a 1-1 draw to 2022 Liberty League champion Ithaca College on Sunday. Lewisburg graduate Mikayla Long, a freshman, scored for the Warriors in that game.
The Warriors got on the board in the 10th minute of the second half, when Long drilled her penalty kick after a foul in the box, scoring in the middle left.
Abbey Gerasimoff stopped four shots in a scoreless second half to earn the tie and sophomore Riley Block stopped four in the first half for the Warriors. Grace Hickey had three saves for the Bombers.
