PHOTO PROVIDED Williamsport's William Pence Kieser, Owen Trump, Isabelle Sanders and Madeline Sanders are all state-bound after placing high in the District 4-6 cross country championships on Saturday.
Williamsport’s cross country team competed in the District 4-6 sub-regional championships on Saturday morning and the Millionaires are sending a total of four state qualifiers to the state meet in William Pence Kieser, Owen Trump, Isabelle Sanders and Madeline Sanders.
Isabelle Sanders, a freshman, took fifth overall while Maddie Sanders, a freshman, finished eighth overall. Keiser, a senior, took seventh overall and Trump, a senior, finished 12th.
“Heading into the district championship meet I told the boys we would need some individuals to step up because our returning state qualifier and senior captain Patrick Nardi was still not fully recovered from an early season injury,” Williamsport coach Jeremy Stepped said. “Pence Kieser and Owen Trump both took on the challenge and set a goal that they would run for one of the five state qualifying spots – that is just what they did.
“Pence has been leading the Millionaires throughout his entire senior year and was prepared to make a statement in the championship meet. Owen was the underdog going into the race but very determined to punch his ticket to Hershey,” Steppe added. “With 200 meters to go, Owen dug deep for a kick to close a 20-meter gap and pass a competitor securing the last state qualifying spot.”
Kieser ran a 16:46.10, just five seconds behind fifth-place finisher Sam Hennett of Shikellamy. State College’s Theo Opperman won the race in 16:07.40. Trump ran a 17:09.30.
As a team, Williamsport took third on the boys side and fourth on the girls side.
Isabelle Sanders ran a 19:37.70. She was behind only State College’s Chloe Poindexter (18:44.60), State College’s Deon Jackson (19:23.0), Hollidaysburg’s Addison Smith (19:30.20) and Altoona’s Ashlyn Noce (19:33.80).
Madeline Sanders ran a 20:18.10.
“Isabelle and Madeline Sanders entered high school this fall ready to work hard and make a statement as freshmen. They quickly rose to the top and caught the attention of area coaches and athletes,” Steppe said. “Both entered Saturday’s championship meet nervous as they toed the line of their biggest race yet. The ladies trusted their training and raced with confidence to secure their first trip to the state championship meet in Hershey next weekend.”
