Hughesville finishes third at second-annual Queen of the Mountain girls wrestling tournament

The second annual Queen of the Mountain tournament got underway on Sunday at Central Mountain as numerous area wrestlers competed and saw success. As a team, Hughesville finished third, Central Mountain finished sixth and Williamsport took seventh. Bald Eagle Area was tenth.

Hughesville defeated Philipsburg-Osceola, 36-24, in the third-place match. Central Mountain fell to Big Spring, 36-18, in the fifth-place match. Williamsport earned a 28-18 win against Danville in the seventh-place match. Bald Eagle Area fell to Shikellamy, 30-12, in the ninth-place match.

Unlike the King of the Mountain or Top Hat tournaments, in which wrestlers compete in brackets by weight, the Queen of the Mountain is set up as a round-robin type tournament via duals.

In total, 25 bouts were wrestled on Sunday in Mill Hall.

The Spartans finished 4-1 and Julia Ritter became the first Spartan to take the mat and wrestle under PIAA competition. She also became the first Spartan to win an official PIAA match in the process.

“I am proud of their efforts today. The girls competed hard and gained a lot of perspective and experience in competition that will hopefully motivate them to continue to improve and work hard this season to get better,” Hughesville coach Royce Eyer said.

Hughesville’s Alexis Kurzawa earned a fall in 1:29 over Philipsburg-Osceola’s Annabella Hunt at 148 pounds. At 124, Hughesville’s Avery Puderbach pinned Philipsburg-Osceola’s Marleana DuVall in just 44 seconds. Hughesville had three straight wins via forfeits from 100 through 112.

In Central Mountain’s fifth-place match against Big Spring the Wildcats’ Austynn Falls earned a pin in just 43 seconds at 142 over Miley Byers. Callie Cella came up shy at 170 against Big Spring’s Heaven Ramirez as Ramirez of Big Spring pinned Cella in 1:33. Big Spring’s Emma Barrick pinned Central Mountain’s Emma Scarborough-Perez in 5:41.

In Williamsport’s seventh-place match against Danville, Marissa Rumsey continued to wrestle great as she pinned Danville’s Azlyn Girardi in 42 seconds. Her sister Lillian also earned a victory at 124 as she won via tech fall against Kiera Johns, 19-4. McKylee Vollman competed well at 190 but was pinned by Danville’s Karmyn Michaels in 4:56. All the other bouts were forfeits.

Against Shikellamy, Bald Eagle Area’s lone win in a contested bout came at 190 where Grace Crestani needed just 60 seconds to pin Shikellamy’s Abiagael Merchlinsky. It was the only contested bout in the dual.
