Local roundup: Wellsboro graduate Brought breaks school record for Lycoming in 100 free

Lycoming senior Cathryn Brought, a Wellsboro graduate, finished second in the 100-yard freestyle with a school-record breaking 53.58 to highlight the final day of the Landmark Conference Championships for the Lycoming College women's swimming team, which finished in sixth place with 171 points at the Mangione Aquatic Center in Baltimore on Sunday.

Brought actually broke her own school-record twice, as she posted a 53.94 in the preliminaries to best her time of 54.07 set at the 2023 MAC Championships. In the finals, her time of 53.58 was just behind Sarah Marston from Elizabethtown's 53.15.

The Warrior women finished the meet by taking seventh in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with the team of sophomore Megan Lonergan, freshman Gwen Fox, senior Courtney Chapman and Brought notched a time of 4:00.90.

The Warriors finished sixth with 171 points, just ahead of Goucher, which had 160. Scranton won the 10-team championships with 848 points.

Senior Eliot Keith finished 11th in the 200-yard breaststroke, posting a 2:17.60, the sixth-fastest time in program history, helping the Warrior men finish eighth with 17 points. Catholic won the team title with 830.5 points.

• Sophomore Nick Reeder, a Montoursville graduate, had a pair of hits, two stolen bases and a run to lead the Lycoming College baseball team, which fell to Greensboro College, 7-1, in non-conference action.

Reeder got the Warriors (0-3 overall) on the board in the sixth inning, when he singled to center field to lead off, stole second, took third on a ground out and scored on a sac fly from junior Danny DeLucas.

Greensboro (3-0 overall) scored a run in the third before two-run innings in the fourth, seventh and eighth, while starting pitcher Michael Richards (1-0) tossed seven frames for the Pride, allowing five hits, a run and striking out five to earn the win.

Drake Carrick got the Pride on the board with a homer in the third inning and Kai Hayen hit a two-run homer in the fourth. Hayen finished 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI and Brody Gardner added two hits and a run.

Both freshman Tyler Iams and junior Jake Schilling each had doubles.

Sophomore Jake Wilber tossed four innings, allowing four hits, a walk and three runs. He struck out four.

Mansfield (3-1) wrapped up their weekend series against Virginia State (4-5) on Sunday afternoon with their second straight doubleheader, 8-5 and 5-1.

Ryan King got the start for the Mountaineers in game one as he pitched 4.1 innings, gave up four runs on five hits, and struck out seven. Mansfield got the scoring started in the top of the first thanks to a Ryan Verbonitz sacrifice fly that scored Ryan Scott.

The Mounties added another again in the third thanks to Verbonitz who this time singled down the right-field line to drive in Jacob Houtz.

The Trojans got on the board in the fourth as they were finally able to get to King. VSU doubled in two runs to tie the game at two. Mansfield got out of the inning and went on the attack.

Jacob Corson delivered three hits and freshman pitchers Jake Schultz and Jack O'Malley combined for six shutout innings to lead the Bucknell baseball team to its first win of the season, 7-3 over Towson.

After conceding 31 runs in a pair of losses to Towson and Wofford on Saturday, the Bison pitched well and played error-free ball en route to their first win of the season. O'Malley picked up his first career win in his debut, and Nick Mulvey recorded the save after escaping jams in each of the final three innings.

Schultz started on the hill and did not allow a hit until a one-out single in the fourth inning. O'Malley entered with two on and two outs in the fourth and struck out Ryan Williamson to escape the jam. The 6'8" righthander went on to punch out five in 2.1 innings of relief, and he earned the win when the Bison took the lead in the fifth.

Corson tripled with one out and scored on Grant Voytovich's sacrifice fly to break the scoreless deadlock. Bucknell added two more in the sixth, when Billy Kender led off with a double and Michael Chiaravallo followed with a walk, Michael Trommer moved the runners up with a bunt, and Nic Adamo drove them both in with a base hit to right-center.

• The Lock Haven softball team wrapped up its first weekend of the season on Sunday (Feb. 18) with a pair of non-conference games on the final day of the LMU Invitational vs. nationally-ranked Grand Valley State and Lincoln Memorial.

The Bald Eagles fell in game one, 11-1, to the second-ranked team in the country Grand Valley State (2-1 overall), before dropping the night cap to LMU (7-6 overall), 11-3.

Delaney Good recorded a hit and scored a run in each game.

Grand Valley State opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the first, before Lock Haven trimmed the deficit to 4-1 with a run in the bottom half.

Good reached safely after being hit by pitch and later scored on an RBI groundout by Summer Peters.

However, that was the final run for The Haven and GVS scored seven runs over the next three innings to earn the run-rule victory.

• The Bald Eagles claimed gold in the distance medley relay and the effort headlined Sunday’s outing, as the Lock Haven men's indoor track and field team opened the 2023-24 PSAC Indoor Championships at Lehigh.

Lock Haven won the DMR with a time of 10:17.05 as the Bald Eagles edged out second-place Bloomsburg (10:17.56) in a thrilling race.

It was Andrew Wehrle, Brennan Miller, Kirk Stewart and Williamsport graduate Gavin Furey who teamed up to take home top honors and earn the conference championship.

From the start, Wehrle put the Bald Eagles out in front with a 3:08.61 - 1,200-meter leg, and Miller ran the 400-meter leg in 51.72. Stewart's impressive 1:57.18 leg at 800 meters kept Lock Haven in line for the title, and Furey's remarkable final leg - a 4:19.55 effort at 1,600 meters - held off all challengers at the line.

For the Bald Eagles on the women’s side, a day-one highlight was the effort of the distance medley relay as Megan Lysek-Hagy, Liberty Gearinger, Jersey Shore graduate Aubrey Sechrist and Gwen Lloyd teamed up to take third in the event.

They ran 12:27.39 and finished third of 12 teams. In the event's opening leg, Lysek-Hagy ran 3:54.46 in the 1,200-meter leg and Gearinger ran 1:00.99 in the 400-meter leg, before Sechrist ran the 800-meter leg in 2:22.19. Llyod ran 5:09.76 on the anchor 1,600-meter leg.

• Penn College dropped its season opener, 14-3, against Misericordia in a nonconference men’s lacrosse game. MU led 6-1 after the first and 7-2 at halftime. The Cougars outpaced the Wildcats 7-1 in the second half.

AJ Dotson led Penn College with two goals, while Sam Hills added one. Alex Hammond turned away nine shots in goal for PCT. Misericordia out-shot the Wildcats, 43-28, held a 38-26 advantage in ground balls, and won 11 of 20 faceoffs.
